I have always envied you guys who can remember all the details of when a knife was made, how many, and so on. This one I just picked up from an estate sale solved my problem. The blade reads Federal Duck Stamp 1995-96. That gives even me a pretty good clue.
I love dated blades or handles. Takes the fun out of it for some of you but for me it is a great find.

Great find. Anything to make the dateing easier is a plus.

Even without the dated package and blade etch the logos and markings on the package give good clues. That corporate logo on the bottom left for instance. First noted use was circa 1990-91, but they added the tiny "est. 1904" circa 1992. The papers and rear of the package have the Schrade website after mid 1998.

By the way there are some knives in this series you still need. :D

I am in the big hairy middle of noting and deciphering the Scrimshaw knives right now. Oh. Brother. Whatever you do DON'T date them by the signature date (F. Giogianni 79). Sometimes the artwork was done a year or more before it was used. And the artwork was often recycled on the same or even different patterns of knives years later both in regular production and on SFO's.

One eBay seller is saying that his circa 1997-2000 knife is a 1979 because of this. And several are giving misleading information about the series production dates like... they were all made before '84. Look at the accompanying papers and logos. In September of 1986 Walter Gardiner, at age 35, was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Imperial Schrade Corporation. Papers bearing a "Message from the President" postdate this.

An example:
QUOTE: "NOTE: ALL OF SCHRADES WHITE DELRIN IVORY AND WHALESTOOTH KNIVES WERE MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 1975 AND 1983. MANY OF THESE KNIVES WERE SCRIMSHAWED AND SOLD AT THE TIME OF THEIR MANUFACTURE BUT MORE WERE HELD FOR FUTURE RELEASE WITH VARIOUS SCRIMSHAW ARTWORK PROVIDED BY SCHRADES WORLD FAMOUS ARTIST, FRANK GIORGIANNI."

Mr. Giorgianni retired in 1992 and his successor as in-house artist was Mr. John Duffey. Additional Scrimshaw art was provided both before and after the Giorgianni/Duffey change by several other artists on contract. M. Barbour, Linda Karst and Bill Feeney to name but a few.

I have never found a complete listing of the Schrade Scrimshaw knives, not even from Schrade. Their guide listed 138 pattern/designs by 2000. These don't include SFO's other series and limited editions other than the Scrimshaw Of The Great American Outdoors series.

I seriously need more copies of old SMKW catalogs to even come close to identifying all of the orphan Scrimshaws I have noted. I am just out of luck with K-Mart except for the rare instances where I spot examples NIB with the K-Mart paperwork.

I'm working on listing them several ways to make them easier to search.
1. By tang stamp number / pattern
2. By year
3. By Art Subject
5. By Series
6. By SFO retailer

There are more of them than you would believe. There is a Scrimshaw flyer section over on the collectors-of-schrades-r.us site. It includes the Imperial Schrade list which Voyles and several other authors worked from in compiling their lists. It is there for your use and enjoyment.

That is a lot of great back ground information. I did suspect that there was a good chance that knives were made before they were packaged for sale. When you mentioned the change over to Duffy I pulled out the loop and could see that this one is signature dated J Duffy 93. The one you have pictured? Is that the same signature date too?

I do not collect these so this one will mostly end up filling out someone else's collection.

Looking over the Schrades R us site I see the name of the pattern changes with the design on the handle. The one with Crappies is called the 503SC crappie, ect. Is the basis pattern called a Slimline Trapper?

Your response was greatly appreciated. I have printed it for reference.

Thanks,
Ed

It took them a bit of time to settle on pattern numbers. Here is my current list of patterns and the base knives they were made from by changing the standard covers to ivory colored Delrin and of course the blade tang stamps in most cases (not all). The pattern numbers did not usually change (after the first years) with the new artwork.

The Patterns
152SC - 152OT Sharpfinger
205SC - 152OT Sharpfinger
260SC - 25OT Folding Hunter 5 1/4" Two Blade
261SC - 25OT Folding Hunter 5 1/4" Two Blade
155SC - 152OT Sharpfinger
296SC - 96OT 4 1/8" 2 Bl. Trapper
500SC - 125OT 5 1/4" Folding Hunter
501SC - 154OT Drop Point Hunter
502SC - 152OT Sharpfinger
503SC - 194OT 3 7/8" Gunstock Trapper
505SC - 8OT 4" Senior Stockman
506SC - 3 7/16" Barlow Pattern
507SC - LB-7 Bear Paw 5" LB
508SC - 25OT Folding Hunter 5 1/4" Two Blade
509SC - 156OT Little Finger
511SC - LB-1 Cub 2 3/8" LB
513SC - 3OT Bearhead 3" LB
515SC - 5OT Bruin 4" LB
518SC - 158OT Guthook Skinner
524SC - 123OT Pioneer 4" Folding Hunter
SC705 - LB-7 Bear Paw 5" LB
LB-1SC - LB-1 Cub 2 3/8" LB

I added the LB-1 with a different stamp used as an SFO for K-Mart. There may be some errors in this list and if any of you spot one, please do tell me!
