The old saying goes that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but I have a theory that if you put the sows ear INSIDE of a silk purse, then nobody will notice. Here are 3 knives for the Gator show this weekend that I sent to Paul Long.......on MONDAY!!! He went above and beyond in the design, execution and speed of completion. They will be in my hands tomorrow monring via Fedex. The sheaths are NOT inlayed, but are carved so that they look like they are. Paul said that this was the first time he tried this and I have no problem being the Guinea Pig.:D The big knives are Aldo's 1084 and the samll one is Don's W2. The stag was dyed using Feibing's leather dye.....learned that little trick from Russ Andrews.......and the wood is stabilized amboyna that I got from Chuck Bybee and finished to 600 grit and sealed with a swipe of West System epoxy. Stainless on the small stag and amboyna knife and cold blued 1018 on the spear point. Not perfect, but I am relatively pleased with my work and astounded by Paul's. Plus, he is a MUCH better photographer than I...lol

Paul is not only one of the finest gentlemen on the planet, his work is second to none........

Joe,

I've been looking forward to seeing more pics of your work and I have to say I like what I see! The bowies, in particular really float my boat. The only thing I would as for is bigger pics! And maybe a close-up of the handle on that stag number.

The sheaths absolutely rock. I think it's great that you choose to include such first rate quality leather work to accompany your knives.

At this point in the game, small pictures and Hollywood "magic hour" lighting work better for me. Think of how good Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon still look on film:D Unfortunately, the "halo" piece for the show which is a 12 inch W2 bowie with some real live amber stag, did'nt make the cut to go to Paul. Stamping issues mean that it only has 80% of my name....lol. This was my first time working with stag and it hadn't really sunk until now that stag is rarely if ever straight or symmetrical....it was a learning experience. The good news is that once you get it to a general size and shape, you don't seem to have to do nearly as much finishing work as with wood.

Very nice, Joe! Glad to see more of your work. Look forward to checking it out first hand at some point.

Paul's sheaths compliment them well. He is not only a great guy to work with, he sure as hell doesn't mess around once the knives reach his steps!

The handle shape on the middle bowie does look familiar. :D

I've probably showed these before, but Paul's work can be appreciated time and again-here with a PJ Tomes Lockback:

Nice work, Paul. Gawd, those are nice. I have to make a decision and send a knife him. I just don't know what to send yet.
