Evenheat Bargain Question

Alrighty -- by chance I came across news of an ad for an Evenheat oven built in 2000 and bought through Sheffields. The man said he bought it and did about 50 knives (five at a time) but never sold any so gave up the venture. He is asking 500 for it, but it has the dial ACI controller. I know that in the future I will be wanting a Rampmaster, so what would that end up costing me and how much trouble are they to switch out?

I would have to drive an couple of hours to check it out and just spent a bunch of money on some other equipment so I'm wondering if I should go ahead with this or not.

Any suggestions, or ideas on the cost of adding a RM? Worth picking up, or just wait and pay a grand for a new version w/ a digital controller down the road?

Thanks -- Burch

I have two kilns on the go. The Evenheat does all the hardening and most of the tempering. It is said to be important to at least do a flash temper shortly after quenching and certainly before cryo. Your kiln is still coming down from 1900 degrees. My old dental burnout kiln gives me an accurate flash temper without having to wait forever. As the evenheat instructions say "It isn't rocket science and it sure aint a refrigerator".

I guess what I'm trying to say is that - even if you go to another one later, it doesn't hurt to have a second one around if the deal is right. If you are willing to stand there and watch / adjust the temperature, it will probably meet your needs for now.

Having said all that, $500 sounds a bit much for old technology and a used machine with no warranty. People seldom truly expect their advertised price. Maybe....

Good luck either way.

Rob!

You can get a brand new one for about $400 more, and it'll have the Rampmaster digital control on it.

You can build your own with digital control for about $200 less if you want to spend some research and learn time. If not I agree with Danbo save your money and get what you want already put together the way you want.
