I imagine that with people easily spooked these days, someone must have been in a position where they had to explain why they were carrying a knife to a security guard, a concerned member of the public, or a law enforcement agent. Has that ever happened to you? What's your story?

Yep. At a KOTC event(King of the Cage). Security was scanning people at the gate. Confiscated my Spyderco Native. Wouldn't have given it up if my car hadn't been 1/2 mile away in downtown Sacramento. Still pissed about it.

I try not to carry anything when I know I'll be going to a bar, club, or show as you never know which ones will frisk you. If I do carry in these situations, it's nothing worth more than $30.

The only time anyone has ever asked about what was clipped to my pocket was my dad, and he is super laid back so he didn't care. If I see a cop scanning people I will sometimes unclip and let it fall into my from my pocket to avoid a confrontation, unless it's something super inoffensive like a Dragonfly that I could explain easily. But no, I haven't yet been hassled about it-- just vigilant about the possibility.

I had to hide a Tasman Salt in a bush outside of a Pittsburgh Pirate game when the gate attendant said something about it. He was actually cool about it and said that he didn't care but "rules are rules". Other than that, never.

My brother got pulled over in my car with my buck special in the glove box. When the Leo asked for papers he popped the glove box open and there it was. I actually ended up on speaker phone because he said he was gonna take it. I said " if I have to drive 50 miles to get my knife back I will file a formal complaint on record. It's in it's sheath for emergencies put it back". He gave my knife back to my brother.

I've accidentally left my key chain knife on myself when going to court to pay a ticket. The guard just said it happened slot and I couldn't bring it in.

Neat thread. I had a Game Warden comment on a tomahawk stuck in my belt while out fly fishing. I showed him the water moccasin bite mark scars on my calf and told him I don't go on the river without it. He took my name and # and later ordered one for his Captain for Christmas......Randy

I've been told game wardens here are super strict about knives but I've had 2 run ins each time with a full length machete and my buck special on my belt... Neither cared at all

Had to explain it to a city police officer one time, but he was satisfied with my answer and there was no trouble.

Ive never had a confrontation, but at both six flags and the Atlanta aquarium ive had to "check" my key chain carry blade (micarta) and an small EDC-dont remember which one. No problems getting them back but the hassle of delays and paperwork is a bummer. Its thier choice so as long as thre is a place to secure my stuff I dont mind. Same thing with cameras once to visit the "Hunley" (confederate submarine) in restoration tanks. Odd but what the hey.

Never been confronted, but every once in a while some one asks: "What is that?" I'm a lefty and primarily carry a small/smaller fixed blade on my left side handle down next to my work cell phone that looks like a brick. Never had anyone freak out, most of the time no one notices.

Yeah. I had a good one, I went camping and spearfishing a few months ago for about a week. Throughout that week we all drank from the minute we woke up till we went to sleep. I lost 2 of my Zero tolerance fixed blades. I never saw them after the trip and just summed it up to I lost them somewhere at the campsite, I was wrong.
In my rush 24 bag I never noticed the two side pockets, until that is I was leaving for a three week trip to fly all over the US looking at schools. I took my rush 24 bag to the airport as my carry on bag, sure enough as I am going through security I see a small panic among the faces of the xray screeners. They called me back to a room with my bag and sure enough found my two blades, in the side pockets. I was detained for about an hour and thoroughly questioned but still managed to make my flight after they made me check my bag.

A couple of years ago, Obama came through ol Butte, MT on the 4th of July and had a BBQ people could attend, going through SS checkpoint i had a SOG on me and they caught it, i put it under a pylon and they let me through. It was still there went i went back, prob because it was a SOG. But they were pretty cool about it. I have no other troubles carrying here in MT.

Today, while at a 9/11 memorial service, I had a citizen ask me why I had a knife on me. I explained that I was a fire fighter - Paramedic and that I carried my knife in case I needed to help someone out of an accident etc. I then explained to her that it had three main features (BM Triage) that there was the knife, a strap/seatbelt cutter, and a glass breaker and that I had used all 3 of the features at least 5 times since I've had the knife for 3 months on duty. Explained how it worked and how the seat belt cutter was pretty safe and the blade sheilded from the victims skin and after I got done, her response was "I dont see the need to carry a weapon like that, you should be arrested for that." Politely said that "My knife was used to help citizens like herself and that I would never threaten anybody with it." Then placed my BRIGHT ORANGE triage back in my pocket and bid her farewell. people need to lighten up.

Recommendation - If you are goingto an event with security or police - LEAVE YOUR KNIFE AT HOME!!!! Geez!

Disneyland security spotted my cousin's pocket clip. We had to return to my car so he could ditch the knife. What a hassle! They are trained to look for pocket clips of any kind from what I have been told.

The funny part is even if you wanted too, it would be very hard to use the 915 as a weapon, its impossible to stab with it!

Only once along time ago in a bar

Someone saw a folders pocket clip and said something I just put knife in car since then will never carry a knife with pocket clip exposed

I got pulled over in Modesto Ca one time when I was 18. I was in town visiting friends and family. It was about 2 in the morning and I was coming back from a girlfriends house. Two police cars pulled me over because my tail lights weren't bright enough! TWO! One officer had his gun drawn and pointed in my direction and his high beams on, the other approached my truck, flashlight drawn and hand on his pistol. Anyway, the cop looked in the back of my truck (I had a lockable shell on the bed) and must have seen my rifle case. Didn't mention it. Asked where I was going, license, insurance etc.
He shined his light in the cab of my truck, asked "What's THAT?"
I thought he was asking about the Spyderco Police I had on the dash, so I said, "A knife."
He said, "No, on the floor" It was my surplus wool blanket he was worried about! Haha.
After a few tense seconds I promised to take a look at the lights and he let me go with a warning.

Anyway, I didn't find out until later, but the night before I was pulled over an Officer had been shot as he walked up to the window of a car he had pulled over for running a light. So that explains the extra back up for a routine traffic stop.

As far as security at fairs, 'clubs' etc. I don't worry too much about it. I don't go to night clubs, and if I think security might be an issue I just clip my knife in my waist band behind my belt buckle :D If I can't get in somewhere just because I have a knife one me, then I don't. The place will loose my business because of their own silly policies. I think we can all agree that 'weapon' bans don't do much to prevent violence, if you want to hurt somebody you'll find a way.
