I sometimes like to go hiking alone, and have been thinking it might be a good idea to have a small hawk with me in case of anything, not excluding being mugged. anyone do this?

I always have one in the woods, also camping and fishing.
ATC VTAC

i would suggest carrying a hawk less for the SD purpose but more for general camp chores. though it would help to deter any rogue vagabonds that come after you.
my mom is always talking about how it is bad that i take edged "weapons" out in to the woods camping etc because someone is going to take them and kill me. i always tell her that noone is going to follow me 10 to 20 miles out in to the woods just to take my blades and kill me unless they are really intent upon the act. if you are just worried about self defense, get yourself a decent cheap tomahawk (there have been good things said about the cold steel hawks for under $50 US). unless of course you are interested in doing some serious fighting, then go with one of the more expensive alternatives.

It's always a good idea to carry an axe or a hawk while hiking. I personally don't have a hawk i use a small axe that's very capable and if push came to shove would make a very good weapon. But if i was really worried about self defence i would carry a glock.....but i live in the U.K. so i can't do that. So carry whatever you need to be safe and learn how to use it .

A tomahawk is a very intimidating weapon but I carry one (when Im in the US, home sweet home) just about everywhere with me. When I go into the woods, I'd rather have that than a knife. I carry it in my car when I drive around. I didn't bring it with my to Korea, where I live now, but I wish I had. Anyway...they are excellent tools and well worth having around.

I carry my customized Trail Hawk or my Ft. Turner Camp Hawk lashed to a day pack while in the woods.

I also pack a VTAC in the map pocket of my SUV.

TOP's Outfitters Axe is an excellent tool, with good ergonomics for more detailed cutting too, so you don't have to carry a knife as well. A little pricey, but not to bad if you find one discounted.

If I really think I may have to dismantle something, I carry a K5 Tactical Hawk.

When I'm in Ohio I walk almost daily in woods near my house. I keep about a mile and a half of ATV/walking trail clear of debris. I carry my Rainier axe in my belt. I hardly notice it but it's there when I need it about once or twice a month. My woods up north was logged a few years ago, lots of slash laying around, so there's plenty reason to carry a tool like that. Even my wife carries one when we hike in the woods up there.
