I started selling a bunch of knives I had just sitting around to fund tools and materials for knifemaking (which will have to be delayed indefinitely while helping family members with financial issues) and I realized I'd kinda like to just sell them all and start completely over. Has anyone else done that, even after they've told themselves they had certain "keepers" that would be with them until the knife ceased to be functional?

Nope. Not a complete flush and restart. I've gotten rid of a few i didn't think i would, but there's a few that i won't ever get rid of.

I collected knives as a kid from 11 or so to 18, I had close to a hundred. Mostly frost, united, bud-k type garbage. Around 19-20 I took them all to pawn shop after getting a benchmade griptilian and realizing the difference quality makes, the only three I kept out of the near 100 I had was the griptilian, a handmade skinning knife that was a gift and a old knife of my grandfathers that had gotten in bad shape that my dad had reworked for me. Now I still have those three about 6 years later plus a BM 950 rift, ZT0560, al Mar sere 2000, BM fixed blade adamas, and a black jack halo attack, a couple machetes and a gransfors bruks axe. I do not regret dumping the junk and upgrading one bit

I have cut back to under a dozen knives (down from 30-40) recently. I always tried to rotate all my knives as an EDC but found I really only enjoyed just a few so I gave up on the rotation and down sized.

I've also decided to lay off buying new pieces for awhile, as in no more for several months, I'm going to rethink how I enjoy my knife hobby. Instead of always lusting after the next purchase I'm going to concentrate on enjoying what I have and to better my sharpening skills. I'd rather have just a handful of my favorites which fit my need's and taste's than a huge collection of knives just to say I own them.

I haven't done a complete restart, but I have gotten rid of all but 4 folders and I'm thinking very hard where to go with new additions. The 4 I kept were knives I simply couldn't part with.

I have done something along those lines a couple of times. I do it when I take my collection in a new direction.
To start, I bought Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. Then I sold them all off and started into "mid-tech" style knives such as Hinderer and Strider, Les George VECP and the like. Now I'm trying to sell the rest of these off and I've pretty much moved into the full custom world.
Because of the changes, my collection has shrunk down to under 10 knives. I used to have 25-30 when they were mostly productions. I enjoy the hunt for the high end knives now. I also enjoy working with a maker to do custom orders.

No, I'm pretty picky when it comes to choosing knives. I pretty much like everything I have, although some don't get carried too often.

I go through a lot of knives, but they are all pretty much the same. I don't go over $400 any more, other than an occasional CRK or Strider. I'm a big Spyderco lover, and most of what I keep on hand have their name. I keep very few knives, and generally am in the $200 range as a max.

I tend to cap my total $ spent on knives at $800. Now whether that is 10 productions or 1 midtech + a few productions, just found some blades that I've come to really like to have, carry and use. There were a few times that I got carried away at wanting to try so many different models that I did end up selling off everything (everything being around 6-8 knives) except for my one favorite. Did that twice and now I have truly refined the type of knives I like to have (still not passing that initial spending cap) and the small collection is comprised of about 5-6 of my favorites....for now :D But, the house rule is that, if a new purchase will surpass the cap, then something must go before anything new can come in.

If you do a complete collection flush, that's like restarting the addiction, unless you follow the flush up with some group therapy.:p Seriously, if you know what you want in a knife, and feel no attachment to your current collection, than it might be beneficial. I have less than a half dozen knives, and like them all, so I have no need to flush at this time.

I made the mistake of restarting before I flushed :p In the past year, I spent around $3k on production knives. I took a serious look at my collection, and realized that a redistribution of that wealth would make me much happier. I bought a couple of really nice knives with the intention of selling off the vast majority of my collection, but I have done no such thing  You guys are bad influences :D

My accumulation is rarely stable and I regularly thin the herd. I will enjoy them for awhile, and then a new one will catch my eye, and well you know...:D

The only modern folder I have not traded/sold is the CPMD2 Paramilitary. I've had the same knives a few times, but enjoy trying new knives. Have slowed down quite a bit over the last year though as I honestly can't find any faults with the knives I now have. Summer's coming and I need to focus funds on "summery" stuff. Oh wait, I need a new summer knife! :D

Yes, sort of.... I started collection Spyderco "Clip-It" models in 1996, back when they still had the molded clips, pinned construction, and saber ground blades. I had about a dozen of them, and I sold them ALL in favor of several of Benchmade's knives. Then, as we all know, Spyderco eventually came out with several "newer" models with removable/metal clips, torx screw construction and FFG blades (e.g., PM1, PM2, Military, Delica 4 FFG, Endura 4 FFG, various Sages, etc.). My "new" Spydie collection quickly grew to 36 pieces as of late 2013.

yup i did, called it the enlistment clearing..... Only kept a grip, Rat1, 0360, and a old buck 110. the collection is slowly getting back to its original grandeur, but of <those knives i only have the 110 and the rat1

I did, approx a year ago to finance this...
