Well, I just finished my second knife. It looks pretty nice. I dont have a scanner or digital camera so it might be a while before I post pics. Anyway, I figured I'd make a sheath. (a traditional scandinavian one). I made a blade-catcher and molded the leather and all and punched my holes for the seam. (Found out that a sharpened nail, the small kind like you hang pictures with, works great in a dremel to put holes for stitching in leather) Anyway, I got halfway done with the seam up the back and showed it to my wife. My seams always look terrible, but this time it was actually looking good. Then I slipped the knife into the sheath, and made a little discovery...

I made a stinkin lefthanded sheath. I know I checked that 3 times at least. I was so mad. Oh well, It looks pretty good anyway. I guess I get more practice now...

Never actualy completed a 'wrong side sheath', but have cut one out and drilled the stich holes, was about to glue it up befor stiching and Duho!

Just make a right handed sheath and offer both for lefty and righty's;)

Yep,Done that more than once myself.I would leave it up to the customer if they want the sheath done the other direction now. Some people like the reverse draw or to carry it in a different position than normal carry anyway.
This is when I say the bad words as sheath making is the part I dislike the most.

i always like to have a few of thoush made by my shealth maker. on hunting knives most of the guys that buy them are not leftys they buy right handed ones. when you have a side arm (.454 casull hand cannon) or even a .22 pistol it is nice to balance out the load by putting the knife on the non-domainet side.

LMAO! :D

That's not nearly so bad as trying to make a lefty sheath and not... I'm looking forward to your pics when you get em, I bet you can have regular photos scanned at Kinko's or somewhere like that, hint hint...

I'd sure like to see or read a tutorial on making such a sheath, I've been thinking I will make a leather-covered wood one soon and sew it like you have done. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dave

Well, I guess I'm not the only one.

I'd carry it on the wrong side (on my left side) but the blade edge is on the wrong side for cross-draw. I guess I needed the practice...

I have a book called "Knifemaking : A Complete Guide to Crafting Knives, Handles & Sheaths" by Bo Bergman that has a really good section on sheathmaking. I also found a little "how-to" at www.brisa.fi. Here's a link:

http://www.brisa.fi/syslid2.html (click the "continue" at the bottom to see the rest)

He doesnt show making the blade catcher. I just traced the blade profile on a couple of pieces of wood and chiseled out the blade shape so that when I sandwiched them together, there'd be a slot that just fit the blade. I glued the two halves together then shaped the outside to the shape I wanted the sheath to have. I wrapped wetted leather around it and let it try to form it, then stitched it up.

I think I must have formed it backwards. (and thus I have a left-handed sheath)
