Ever "downsize" on knives?

at one point I had around 10 Spydercos, but I sold 7 of them and am down to an Endura, Native, and UKPK. I find I like having a few knives and using/carrying them more often more than having a lot of knives that hardly ever see use. anyone else "downsized" with knives?

I would say that I'm definitely in the process of doing so, currently. I love knives, and have quite a few. I'm slowly coming into a phase where I'd like fewer knives, so they need to be awesome.

I found that after the age of 50, I did a continuing downsizing of my stuff in general, knives and guns in particular. It was like a weird epiphany happened, and I looked at all the stuff and thought "what the hell and I doing with all this shite!?" Like waking up from a kind of temporary insanity. At one time I had enough knives to totally fill two shoe boxes. Now they are all in a medium size tobacco pouch.

I still love my knives, but not nearly as much, and a very pragmatic view took over. How many do I really need or can carry at one time? I sold off all my custom stuff, and most of the high end stuff. Some went to kids and nephews who showed an interest, but most got sold off. Now I keep just enough knives to have a rotation, but they all will fit in one hand if I try hard. About 8 to 10 knives. Almost all traditional pocket knives or SAK's.

I find that with less knives, I do appreciate the ones I have more, and use them more. I don't miss the ones I sold/gave away at all.

I sell lower dollar knives to buy higher priced knives. If I sell 5 knives for 100 dollars each I will buy 1 for 500 dollars. I try to keep the dollar value similar.

Yes I am doing something like that. I have two more folders and one more fixed blade and I have my "perfect" knives. If I can, I am not going to buy anymore, or sell anymore. I have sold a bunch and bought a bunch to get the knives I have right now. To me, they are perfect, every knife I could need for any task.

I tend to downsize my collection down to my core 5-8ish knives every year or so. Then it builds back up as I try different stuff, before downsizing again.

Not yet, but I feel it coming. I have knives that I've never carried and others that are near duplication to another, so, yes it's coming.

My issue is I downsize, just so I can buy another knife. I think my collection has flatlined around 100 give or take.

Down size?

Yes, I have gone to smaller knives for most carry situations including the woods.

Oh, you mean numbers?? I haven't downsized my knife accumulation as of yet and the pile keeps growing taller.

I'm working on it...got about 250 and trying to get down to a manageable 50. I've got a lot of weight to lose :D

Edit: Oh yea, pics or it didn't happen :)

Yep, at one point I had over 100 knives in my collection ranging from Chinese Kershaws and Opinels up to a Box Elder large Sebenza 21.

Now I have a dozen or so knives that all get carried and used. Most hover around the $100 mark. I am seriously considering, despite my disliking the frame lock, a standard 21. I didn't carry the box elder for fear of damaging the inlays, but it was too large for special occasions. Kind of a catch 22 and I don't like the small sebenzas.

I have no reservations about wailing on a standard sebenza though.

Sold off most of my collection to fund other hobbies, but now that those other hobbies have run their course, I'm back to collecting. All users, though.

Going to soon, as soon as I can decide of a target collection size goal...Currently own about 30

Im down to about 25 from 50+

Been trimming out non users and safe queens, trying to keep only what I carry. Im down to a good mix of customs and productions, and the wife is happy I don't have blades stashed everywhere:-)

Yup, I find i enjoy a smaller collection of one's I really enjoy. I think long and hard before I buy a knife now. All users, I tried to have nicer knives that I kept pristine, but that wasn't for me.

I have been holding off on smaller purchases to make room for a larger one.

Yep. Doing it currently. I've gotten rid of anything that I don't use as long as it's not special in some way (like it was given to me).

I now only have about 5 users and a handful that were given to me. No need for me to have 30+ knives. I just can't justify it. I still love the hobby and I still love knives. I just can't see a reason to have more than a few knives since they will all most likely last more than a lifetime.

Plus, average folders have gotten way too expensive. I refuse to pay for some of the stuff out now.

Not dogging on anyone else....just my take.

Yep. Just did. Kept four folders and one fixed blade.

Still have three more folders left that are boxed up waiting to be passed on to family, friends, or co-workers.
