that someone would make a knife that could deflect .223 ammo and still shave but people would still think it was overrated?

Hello,

i suspect Vary Rarely would a blade deflect a bullet on its EDGE, i would think it would be more Probable that if a knife deflected a buttlet it would be on the Flat of the Blade or Handle and the Edge would be unaffected.......<shrug>

Never Know though..

Sounds like a new knife test to me. Hhmmmm, rope cutting, wood hacking, point impact, blade bending, blade shooting ....do we dare consider what else we might come up with?

Smoke, yeah, it's kinda like the time I held my Sebenza at arms lenght in front of me and had my brother do as you said, shoot the edge of the blade. In my case the bullet cut in half and pierced both my ear lobes. It still would shave though. I hesitate to post that test because, as you say, the next poster would say if I had used knife X with it's much better blade with a thicker blade edge, I would not have to wear these silly ear studs!

(This test not advisable, do so at your own risk)

ThomM, you forgot the ultimate spine lock test. Open you favorite liner-lock, have the blade face you then have your brother shoot at the spine. If it doesn't close, it's a good knife.

But then there's the controversy of what caliber bullet.

Or the bigger controversy. Was the steel used for your knife is made of the same steel as Wonder Woman's bracelets?

Or was it transported by mysterious black helicopters to a secret volcano forge where the steel was oil quenched, bead blasted, marinated with secret spices, stir fried with soy sauce, and covered in a ceramic coating by the hands of young virgins?

I want one of those,,,, does it come in talonite?

sorry for the first post it was an attempt at humor, i shall not make such a mistake again.

Then again lets all shoot our knife handle material also because as we know thats the PRIMARY target in a FIRE FIGHT!! and besides its a good Gimmick point(for some that is) to sell a knife or 3....LMAO

A couple of years back, SOG used just such a test as an advertiser on their fold up catalog. They shot a jacketed .45 ACP round at one of their knives--the bright bladed model that was the precurser to the SEAL 2000. They claimed that after X rounds, the cutting edge was undamaged. I don't know about a .223 though. We shoot handguns (.38, .357, 9mm, .45, etc.) at a 3/8 plate steel ram cut out all day long and only have to go down range and repaint the scuff marks. We tried a 5.56 mm (.223) in an AR15 from 75 meters and the rookie of the bunch thought the shooter missed the target--no movement. Upon further inspection, there was a neat 1/2" hole in the center of the ram!

In answer to the question, yes. It seems everyone gripes about great materials. How can you cpmplain about ATS-34??? I've mentioned this before; I still carry my 440c (GASP!) Camillus US Army knife, and love it to death. If I can use 440c, there is nothing wrong with ATS-34. Don't get me wrong. I eagerly await my 710 (ATS-34) and Spyderco Native (GIN-1), but I'll still probably carry eith my US Army knife or my SAK's.

I have to wonder if that's a troll or not -- there are so many people who say the M-16 isn't a real rifle....

OK, by that I gather that .223 is ammo for an M-16? What I meant was that my experience with guns is limited, VERY limited, so I don't know what .223 means. So .223 is for an M-16... is it a large bullet? Never used an M-16, just .22 rifles.

The pro-knife, anti-gun, obviously now an IDIOTIC, anti-violence, yet still somehow pro-violence kinda guy.

.003 larger than the .22

I have actually read 2 stories over the years of bullets hitting blades. One was an army ranger wearing a Hartsfeld sword on his back and the bullet hit the part of the blade sticking out above his shoulder. The blade broke and supposedly when he went to Hartsfeld to have it ground down to a shorter blade, Phill replaced it for free saying it shouldnt have broke. The other story was a guy who got shot and the bullet directly hit the closed Buck folder in his pocket saving him from harm. Anybody ever hear any stories like these?

And yes, I got the point of the original post, just thought this might be interesting.

I have heard of a Randall getting hit by a 7.62x39 round, I believe, during the fire-fight in Somalia. The blade broke, but the bullet stopped. IIRC, the guy had quite a bruise.
This story was contained in a series of articles in the Philly newspaper on the Somalia battle, entitled "Blackhawk Down", or something like that. A good read.

...just the other day, an FBI agent named Fox Mulder ("Spooky") apparently witnessed a man getting shot in the heart -- only to have the round ricochet off the Leatherman Wave he was carrying in his breast pocket!

Thanks Walt. I had no idea how to find it. I have heard that the writer of the article has now writting a book on the same subject. I may have to get that book as well.
