I love being able to show my knowledge of knives. It makes me feel smart. The other day I was with a couple friends, and one says hey show Matt your hunting knife. So in my head I'm thinking, must be a traditional because he said hunting. Maybe a buck 110? And he pulls it out to show me and it's one of the inexpensive A/O rescue knives. So I say oh I have one like that, the little notch on the back is a seatbelt cutter. And everyone's like What? Really? And I say and the little spike on the back is a glass breaker. EMTs use those kind of knives to rescue people. And everyones like oh that's so cool!

I know this is not the best story but I wanted to share. When have you got to show off your knowledge?

I work in the Lodge department at Dick's sporting goods and I use my knife knowledge everyday! It is so easy to upsell some kid who just turned 18 from a creepy $15 gerber to a nice $20-$50 kershaw or SOG. The best part is when they come back in and rave about how they love the knife. If only i had enough time to show them how to maintain the edge. I wish we still carried Benchmade and Spydercos.

I want to work somewhere like that. Seems pretty fun.

It was for the first couple years. now it's just a paycheck every couple weeks. on the bright side, I get crazy deals on knives through manufacturers . that kinda makes up for the crappy pay rate.

Oh that sucks. But at least you get good deals. I haunt been to the dicks in my town for a while. I'm going to have to check out the lodge section soon.

It is pretty tough to find someone to have intelligent conversation about knives with. I try to educate my father and older brother.

Steel types, heat treat, cryo, lamination, sintered combo edges, diamond friction forged, folded, plattern welded, hollow grind, saber, flat ,convex............

People's eyes glaze over.....

The first time you show some one a hair jumping, hair whittling sharp edge, they have a hard time comprehending it.

I am able to show scouts knives, and teach them a bit.

I had an opportunity to demonstrate tomahawk and axe throwing at a pioneer gathering. 210 kids. Only one was not able to eventually stick a hawk. 8 hours of throwing. I have never had my hawks and handles as beat up!
