Ever have one of those shaves?

You know what I am talking about, you get the lather just right, the razor glides across your face, and the end result, if not BBS, is darn close to it. The type of shave that was just a pure pleasure and a great way to start or finish your day. Well I had one this morning. I didn't do anything different, but all the pieces fell perfectly into place and I almost didn't want it to end. Any way it did end and I had to leave the razor on the shelf and get on with my day, but it was a wonderful start and has set me up to be in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Here's hoping I can capture the feeling again tomorow:D

Yes, but during the week my shaves are all in the evening after the kids are in bed. Sunday mornings when I'm not rushed I enjoy shaving as well. In over 15 years I never enjoyed a single shave from my Mach 3's. Now I look forward to shaving probably 4 times a week with the DE razor and badger brush.

Yes. My everyday shave is darn near perfect these days, but every now and then everything just hits perfectly all at once and the result is exceptional.

it's an even better feeling with a straight, for me at least. Get the honing and stropping just right, and get one of the very best shaves, no burn, drag, or anything.... Love it!

Lets see the canned goo and multi bladed razor guys try and have the perfect shave experience, I don't think it is going to happen very often for them if ever. I know that there may be a few that that combo would work perfectly for, but they would be far and few between

I love those days... perfect water/soap ratio, perfectly stropped razor, nicely softened beard... Followed by a nice splash of aftershave just tops it off for the perfect shave. I have lots of days of good and great shaves, but those rare perfect shaves are awesome!

Just had one 30 minutes a go! The Wife at a school board meeting, kids working so I had the quiet house to myself. Just received a few sampler items in the mail so it was time to try. Vulfix Luxury sandalwood creme, Semogue 1305 to whip it up, shaved very close to a BBS, wiped down with some Thayer's Lavender Witch hazel and finished with some Conk's Bay Rum. Reminds me of Dad getting ready for church in 1969. :)

Man, I love it when everything comes together and you get one of those extra good shaves!

I had one of those shaves a couple weekends ago.... laid in the chair with a facial mask on under a steaming towel with a little eucalypus (sp?) oil under my nostrils, warm shaving cream applied by a very nice badger brush, and a female barber who knew how to use the straight razor (removable blade type). I love the feeling of a good shave.

an hour from me we have a salon for men called "The Men Zone" (one in Kennewick, WA and one in Pasco, WA) which has all of the haircutting, shaving, facial, manicure/pedicure served up with a beer and a massage and the ladies that work there aren't hard on the eyes either.

I don't care anything about getting a manicure or pedicure, but that place sounds great!

You guys are terrible!

I used to shave with my dad's Excellsior in High School and beyond, but now it's been forty years!

This particular thread has me sliding towards the inevitable purchase of more stuff, and the restoration of my dad's razor!

Thanks a bunch!

I guess it was probably coming anyways. Sheesh, even Costco is killing me on that plastic multi-blade stuff (not that I expect getting back into THIS to be a cheap adventure, ultimately, knowing me).

It isn't that bad really. I have been bitten by razor acquisition disorder (RAD) and I have only spent $160 on razors, the most expensive being my Edwin Jagger 89L at $40. then throw in another $100 for my two badger brushes and the original boars hair brush. Considering that fusion blades are going for $21.65 for 5, and that I only get a couple of shaves out of a cartridge I would have spent that on blades alone in the first year. Soaps last longer than the canned goo, and blades by the 100s are less than 5 cartridges, so I think its cheaper over all. I just choose to spend the saved money on more razors:D

I hear ya. I spend a LOT more than that on Fusion blades.

I still have a couple of my old safety razors from the sixties too, but blades are hard to come by and expensive. I'd rather "go straight."

I suppose Whipped Dog will be getting an order soon. Then I'll look into restoring my dad's (as soon as youngest son returns them from his stash of his grampa's memorabilia). As I recall there's a replaceable blade straight model in there too that I shaved with a few times too (I always thought they were for Barbers to "shape" hair with), but greatly preferred the 1920's Excellsior.

I'm starting to warm to this idea.

Yeah, Pops old "Blue blades" were a bit rough sometimes but blades are better now. I can get 5 shaves out of a Personna red @ .20 a piece. That's 50 shaves out of a $2.00 pack of 10! Of course my Wife isn't fooled by the fact that any monies saved goes towards creams, soaps, after shaves, balms, more razors, blades I won't use for a long time, brushes, etc....:D

DE blades cost pennies-per-shave. Contrast that with mulit-blade cartridges which often cost over a dollar-per-shave.

For you, shaving has become a hobby unto itself. There is nothing wrong with that. If you enjoy it, that's great. And, as guy hobbies go, this one can be kept quite inexpensive. Tell your wife that you could always take an interest in sports cars or watches or custom knives instead. Seriously, of all the things a guy can spend a few bucks on, shaving cream is one that his wife should object to least.

But, a person doesn't have to got this way. A new DE shaver is likely to buy several different brands of blades and try them out, several lather products and try them out, even several aftershave products to try out. But, after this experimental phase, it is possible to fall into a plan that works great for you and then the extra spending stops and you can actually end up saving -- actual savings, money in your pocket -- about a dollar-a-day vs. multi-blade cartridges.

Yeah I've been at this for about a year, and I've had a bunch of stuff and spent a lot of money.

But after a while I sold off everything I wasn't using and now I'm down to using my favorites.
