Ever have to go without a pocket knife?

so I’ll be flying to another state for five days.
I’m only taking a carry on. Too much money to check a bag when I don’t need to.

I don’t like the thought of no knife for a week.

I thought about mailing a knife to where I’m staying but that’s too much effort, haha.

What do you guys do in this case?

Run to Wally World after you land, buy a Kershaw Hotwire. Will cost less than $10.00. Should keep the DT's away until you get back home to your EDC's. Give the Hotwire away to some kid or friend before you head back. Unless of course you forget like I did and TSA finds and confiscates it. lol

Two step process:
Step 1) Buy a blade-free multi-tool that can be carried on. For those times I carry on, I have a Victorniox Classic SD that I cut the blade out of - no knife now, but I have the scissors, tweezers, toothpick, file, and screwdriver. Another option is the Leatherman Style PS - no blade on that one either, but you get pliers, scissors, tweezers, etc. One of those two will get you nearly everything you need until you have time to do to Step 2:
Step 2) Buy a knife at your destination. On your way back to the airport on the way home, mail the knife back to yourself. You could also bring along a padded envelope and a shipping label so all you have to do is drop the knife in the mail at the nearest USPS drop box.
This way, you get to buy a knife you can keep, and it only costs you a few extra bucks to keep it.

Last time I flew for a vacation I picked up a Kershaw Starter $25 just after landing. You could always mail it home to yourself or give it away on your way to the airport.

I pack one if I check a bag, otherwise I go without. It sucks. It is interesting, everyone I work with carries a knife and they all have mentioned the same thing.

It's really amazing that once you get used to always having a knife, you miss the functionality they provide.

This is just one of the reasons I have not flown commercial since 2001. Why people tolerate this kind of treatment is beyond my understanding. It's as if the very rights that our Founding Fathers fought and bled and died for are now so unimportant that we should just give them away so some of us can "feel safe".

Because life sometime necessitates being somewhere in four hours that might otherwise take three days of driving to reach. I don't like leaving my knife at home, but I'd rather have the security at the airport catch somebody. I can live without my SAK for a bit. I'll bring a pair of folding scissors if I am hard up to cut something.

Luckily I’ve been able to drive last few trips. But when I’ve flown, I buy something when I land ( Spyderco ) then mail it home. Always a great excuse to purchase a new knife :)
That is a reasonable solution or you buy something like a SAK and leave it since you have the same issue on the return flight. I would ask myself just how much I "need" the knife at the destination? Maybe abstinence. Just depends on how you feel about things.

Getahl, have you ever heard of one single instance of the TSA actually catching or stopping a hijacker? Their failure rate when tested with fake guns, knives and bombs has always been around 90% since they were first created. They are an absolute joke. My biggest issue is that our Govt. expects us to surrender our rights but get nothing in return for it.

I check a bag; but any excuse to buy another knife is optimized. My "travel" knives alone would make a pretty good collection. Flew to L.A. a couple months ago and somehow four knives I didn't take ended up coming home with me. I hate when that happens....

As for TSA, when was the last time you saw a hijacking? 30 years ago it was pretty common, now days, not so much. It could be working. I think they could do something better and less invasive, but people here won't accept some of the currently available tools law enforcement could use.

Within Canada I can fly with my leatherman squirt. Last time I landed in Vancouver I got out of airport sat in a car and received a welcome package containing ZT 562 lol. It's dope to have knife buddies :)

This thing got the kind of knife I don't mind using to pry into an iPhone to pop it open.

Hotwire for 10$ is good.

If not buy a cheap knife and gift it before you fly back. A Gerber para frame (12$) will put a smile on a non knife guy happy.

I usually just go knife less for the couple of days I'm gone. all the criss cross of city, county, municipality and state laws is overwhelming and even with the internet to look some of them up the local cities law and ordinances are about impossible to find or get in full.

calling the local city or county or state police for guidance is an exercise in futility. they typically have zero idear. even trying to get someone beyond the help desk there who knows is impossible as I've leaned they dont exist. this includes the local politicians...I've tried that many times and spent a fortune of time just to see if it could be done. it cant.

lastly the local store selling youd think wouldnt sell illegal knives to own or carry......guess again. cant guarantee that. even if it was a store that was on top of it, that doesnt mean as you cross a city or county line your not a felon now. if I seem over the top I'm not trying to be just trying to point out the nonsense we live in everyday with big govt and multiple layers of govt that dont interact well or at all. btw, not being political just saying what is really happening.

so yeah in the end I just go without a knife or the smallest non locking I have or can find.

I flew a couple months ago and just didn’t have a knife the whole week. I figured I could buy one of the $4 Ozark Trail Walmart knives at my destination if I absolutely needed one. Besides the weirdness of it not being there, it wasn’t a big deal.

I mail myself a SAK to where I'll be staying, and then gif tit off when I leave. The airport shuttle van driver, or the kid working as a grounds keeper where we were staying. Whom ever.
