Ever lost a knife? I almost quit the hobby today.

I’m sure a fair share of you have on here.

Well this weekend almost ended my knife collection hobby.

On the 4th we were setting fireworks off in the subdivision and of course , rule #9. I’m HOA president so otherwise I would have just watched. Mine for the evening was a very nice action Hinderer xm18 3.5. To top it off I just received and installed a lot of the blue Ti hardware on Thursday.

Got home from the culdesac Friday night and could not find my knife anywhere. Made 3 trips back with a flashlight and never found it.

Saturday morning we had to get up early and go visit my wife’s dad. 5hr round trip so we stayed all night.

All this time I am just replaying the whole night. Can’t remember anything about the knife. Had it and was opening fireworks and after the last one put it in my pocket and came home.

So we get back home and we are in the back yard and about to get in the pool. Wife says hop on the cycle and drive back down there and look one more time. So I did. I had already given up and wrote it off. Wasn’t going to lose another minute thinking about it.

Sure enough I see it laying a foot off the road in the about 4” tall grass. Sun was just right and me going slow on cycle it just popped!

I picked it up but at the same time I was “mad” at the knife?!

Now here is the best part…

I was pretty upset and kind of pouted around Saturday.

Pretty sure I told my son I was too tired to play that much while we were at the farm. I’m also pretty sure I was short with my wife due to being upset about losing a knife.

Driving home I thought to myself, wow I missed out on time with my boy today just because I was upset about losing a material item. I could tell I hurt my wife’s feelings as well.

I’ll never let that happen again.

Just want to say, this is a great hobby but be very careful not to let it consume you and miss out being with your family or cherishing them. Enjoy every moment you have with them.

I hope everyone has a great end to your 4th of July weekend.🇺🇸🔪

Pretty much been right there with you! Lost a GEC and probably could have behaved a bit better about it, too. I think I found the knife in a pocket after making a fool of myself. Glad you found your knife and learned a bit about life!

Oh, the wife loses a diamond earing, time to buckle up. Kid loses an Xbox, it's rolling downhill. I'm just a man, no way I'd stop.

Haven't lost one yet, but had a few that my sons couldn't live without.

Happy you found her safe and sound.

Glad you found your knife and also got a bit of a priority reset!

I dedicate my front right pocket for my knife, that way I'm not in and out of it unless the knife is coming out. Knocking on wood, haven't had one get out by itself yet!
Right pants pocket and positioned all the way against the pocket edge. Depending on the knife I can still put a few doodads in there. Super secure there unless I’m really not paying attention or I’m vacationing in a European tourist spot.

I tried right back pocket once and it was a terrible idea. I think the movement of sitting down—standing up—vice versa makes the knife very likely to pop outta the pocket. Especially true in smaller spaces like cars.

I've permanently lost a few knives by now. Reason more for me not to buy overly expensive knives.

I was never really upset over it though.

Last knife I temporarily lost is my Recon 1. I lost it while walking my dog... so what did I do?
I returned to that same path where I walked my dog at a first place despite the fact it was already getting pretty dark outside - and my dog found it. She probably felt my smell on it.

The only "expensive" one I've lost was a TSA confiscated DPX Triple Black that I didn't have time to go back through security for. It inspired me to get more deep into the knife world and now I have a mess of fun stuff costing much more! I did pull $300 out of a slot machine in my Vegas layover on the same trip, so the loss was just emotional.

I have lost a few myself. I can get upset no matter what the price. Even more upset if I loose the knife to a thief.
I’d hate to lose a knife to a thief knowing it might be used to hurt or threaten someone. But more realistically, I like to think those idiots are more likely to sell it or forget about it in a drawer somewhere. I’d rather lose a knife in the woods than in the hands of a bad apple.

Glad you found it and all turned out well, and more glad you used it as a lesson on what's really important. I've thought about it similarly before when going through my pictures. I love taking pictures of knives, but when I'm gone and my loved ones look through my pictures, I don't want it to just be a bunch of images of knives I've carried during these amazing adventures we go on. It's not about knives specifically, but I just don't want all of my pics to be pics of "stuff". Since then I've made a point to keep it balanced, and make sure I'm capturing the experience and the people first and foremost.

I do have a good story about "loosing" a knife as well, that I've told before, but seems apropos here. Once on a morning walk while camping I stopped by the creek and took some pics of my Hinderer Jurassic, and rested on a log enjoying the flow of the water while immersing myself in the natural beauty. When I got up, I noticed that it wasn't in my pocket, panicked, and spent about a half an hour searching frantically. Just as I was giving up, dejected, and trying to come to terms with the fact that I had lost my beloved Hinderer, I sat down on the same log, looked over; and what do I see?...

My Jurassic still stuck in the log where I was taking the pictures of it 🤣

Anyhow, good on you for keeping things in perspective my friend 👍
