...on both sides of the blade? I never have.
This idea came up as I discuss options with a custom maker.
If no, opinions either way? Does it fly in the face of folksy convention?

I believe Mike Alsdorf had one for sale 5 or 6 months ago(maybe longer) with a nail pull on both sides of the blade. If memory serves there was discussion on the remaining thickness between the deepest part of the nicks. The remaining thickness issue really is not one in my opinion.

I believe I've seen some "magic trick" knives with shields on both sides- but with different colored scales on each side. I'm not sure about the nail nicks though.

I don't think I've ever seen a completely symmetrical slipjoint. That could be very cool.
The GEC #53 muskrat would be perfect for that treatment- it's already almost completely symmetrical.

The Scagel style slipjoints have a thru hole or slot which effectively is a nick on both sides. Works well. When I cut nicks I cut farther than half way thru...so ....if I cut on both sides I would see thru...probably not good or good looking either. Perhaps offset nicks would be OK if you could figure out where offsets would be reachable with your finger nail.

You are correct on the Scagels repros. I have two that I love. Makes a blade more pinchable and not so reliant on nails, of which I bite off anyway. :o

Gus Cecchini (GTC knives) puts (his version of) the nail nick on both sides of the blade. Of course, his Crystal model slip joint is a bit more modernistic in appearance than the average slip joint.

I saw a recent post from cnas about a custom he picked up at Blade this year. It had shields on both sides.

Yea, I'll post that one again when I get home from work. M. Zscherny made it for me, and said to became totally OCD trying to get the 2nd shield in just the right position so as to match up with the first.

Rhett Stidham once showed me an old knife that had 4 blades each having double pulls on both sides of each blade. It's been done in the past men. I've used double shields in the past and recently made a large coke with swing guard that had double shields. I think it's a classy touch.
