Hello folks,

I couldn't stand it anymore, the BT2 coating on my BM 806 afck 2 Axis. So I went to the buffer, the teflon coat came off pretty easy, just took lots of time. In any case, to my great suprise, the D2 seems to be more stainless then ATS-34. I suspect that because I removed the coating so slow, the clear coating underneath is still there and takes care of the blades surface, or it's kinda a anopeen finish, like on earlier microtechs Socom's.

While I was on it, I carefully removed the blade and polished the pivot area to mirror finish - there was BT2 coating on it too, but the spacers had already turned circkels in them, while I've only had the knife for like 1 week, not even really using it. in any case, polishing those parts had an awsome effect. I'm talking way past sebenza smooth. Probably because there is no ball detent for causing drag.

I also satin finished the clip and the screw head.. looks better I think.

Needless to say, these modifications shoot BM's service warranty to hell, not that they exist here in europe.. it's cheaper to simply trade for a new one then to ship it over for repairs and getting it back with the import tax bill.

Here's a look (sorry too big pics) :

and compared to a MOD CQD ( the big mutha :D if you know that tha BM's blade is 4 inches)

Oh another matter - while the BM's blade was plenty sharp yet coarse, I would have rather had the round hole, dunno why, but it just feels better on my spydie military. I do however like the tip-up option. No openings at all, you gotta really flick it hard to get past the axis.
THe D2 perfoms also pretty good. I think the opted for a lower HRC (like 59) to retain toughness. I'd bet this outcuts any 154-cm version in the long run.

Lemme know what you think of it.

Greetz and take care, Bart.

P.S. if you got some replacement large folder you would be willing to trade for the CQD and/or AFCK, lemme know, because I'm european, trading is the only way to avoid customs billing me for buying US made stuff. Heck, I got the AFCK as well as the CQD by trading. But you know how it goes.. sometimes I just need new toys :D

That looks great! I wish they would offer those without the BT2. Just never have liked black blades, and the BT2 just does not seem to hold up very well to long term heavy use.

I have a 710 M2 with the b2 looked like crap after a year so i tried to do somthing similar only I used a dremel tool. Bad Idea Now the blade looks really bad. But it is shinny

Looks great,I don't like black blades either.About the flicking, hold back on the axis-button and the blades flicks real easy.

How did you manage to keep the logo after polishing? It looks really good. Maybe I will try that with mine if the BT gets marred.

Hi Bart,

Nice job! BM never should have bothered with the coating imho.

One question: how was the edge out of the box? Was it overly thick and blunt or thin and sharp.

Take care,
JD

Hello folks,

Thanks for the kind comments. I really appreciate it.

The logo stayed on, since I only removed the black layer of the coating. Underneath I think is something else then a teflon coat, something harder and gray. As I said, it kinda reminds me of the SOCOM-E aopeen finish. The logo is never put there before the coating, but afterwards so they can give it a different coating. I think you can see the coating because you see plain steel there, while the rest of the blade excapt the edge is still somehow coated a bit.

The edge was hairpopping sharp, and plenty thin. I think Benchmade finally listened to customers :D It isn't spyderco sharp, they still gotta learn a bit, but they did made their edge angle different, thinner.

How are ya JD ? E-mail me if interested (also if you're not interested in trades :D ).

Greetz and take care, Bart
