This thread is closed. This forum is about knives and their uses as tools.

"this forum is about knives and there uses as tools "
so talke about it
yes knives r used to stabbbb things, even unto there death

if more people did they would realize thers no such thing as a tactical knife
tactical knife is a term made up so we can waltz around the primary use of a knife as a killing tool
thers no such thing as a tactical knife
its either designed to kill stuff or do something else

I think it crossed the line when I described chocolate mutilation.

While I think this could have been better stated, I agree that the thread was closed for BS reasons.

If you read the description of the Blade Discussion Forum, it says,
Your area to discuss knives in general: Folders, Fixed blades, Swords & knife related equipment, etc. Take off topic posts to the Community Center & manufacturer specific questions to their respective forums.

I don't see any part that says knives may not be discussed as weapons. In fact, there are hundreds of threads throughout the history of the Blade Discussion Forum that are weapon related. And since when was the preservation of life not a "use" of a knife as a "tool"? A weapon can't be a tool?

The thread was amazingly civil and Mr. Treat has shown himself not to be a troll, in my experience.

Let me go on record as saying that I think that "Double Edge Dave" is getting way too heavy handed in his moderating duties. This is just one of many posts that have been closed by him for ridiculous reasons.

Here's the thread in question, btw -- http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=208538

Thanks for bringing this up, Larry. This has been chapping my ass as well.

Larry, you are definitely correct. Knives are used to stab and kill. There should be nothing wrong with discussing that on this forum. The problem I see with threads like the one that was locked is that too many of them turn into name calling and threats. It seems that this kind of topic brings out the worst in some people.

KWM,

Your point is quite valid: threads like that can often turn sour. But the way I see it, that thread was cut off way before the point of no return. Sure, an overzealous moderator might say, "I'd rather lock threads before they turn into pissing contests." But if that was the general rule, then every Emerson thread should be locked at the first post. Or people just shouldn't be allowed to talk about spine-whacking, liner locks, or brand names.

TOTC, I agree 100%. That is why, I think, that Larry figured the reason that the thread the thread was closed was that Dave was trying to be politically correct.

No, and I hope I never have to. But I'd probably tune in to any discussion of knife injuries from a medical standpoint.

Isn't this just about the dumbest gawddamnest thread I've seen here yet? :(

The original thread was a 'blood, guts, and glory needed' post by an armchair thrill seeker who wanted to live vicariously through the 'true' tales of others...and when his 'blood lust' wasn't satisfied, he got pissy...just like the little 'wannabe-puke' that he is..."for shame, for shame" Whatadick!

YC, don't stoop to his level my friend; you're spot on, and way too correct in your stated position to pay heed to his type. Fight the good fight, and stay true to yourself.

(If a person at that critical time of 'self-protective need' even considers the legal ramifications of his defensive actions, while 'in the moment', he/she has just seriously minimized their chance of survival, all based on such trivial pursuits. Live, then deal with the consequences!)

Larry, you know what it feels like to take a life...even if it's just a pig. It's glorious to some, offensive to others. I like your knives, but I think you're waaay out there bud. Not everyone 'needs' to take a life, much less enjoy it. "Think of the children" (pun intended), before you post please.

The thread was locked for reason, i.e. it had denigrated to the degree that it was no longer meaningful. I too hate censorship, but it was a BS thread to start with, and it just got worse from there. I support the effective 'moderation'...deal with it.

Mr. Treat, if you want to know about taking a life with a blade, I can't help you...I haven't done it. But, I did cut the living **** out of a few people when I was younger, and I always ended up feeling sick.

Blood is nasty and gets all over everything, I hurt, I puked, I pissed myself, I was scared, the adrenalin dump caused extreme fatique when it passed, I worried that I'd get arrested, I worried that 'it' would never end, that 'their' buddies would seek me out, I slept poorly for years, I became very wary of strangers, I became very hostile for little reason...it's phucked up...anything else you want to know bud?

Knives are fun, useful tools...great to make, collect, trade, share, and use...but they are tools, plain and simple...regardless of how they get used, they are simply tools.

Intent? Intent is in the mind of the user, not in the tool.

*pissed* Mel

Did someone say Emerson? What would be better for stabbing an Emerson or a Sabenza?
:)
Sorry couldn't resist.

I just read the thread in question and while Mr. Treat may have not "treated" the subject with all appropriate mature consideration, it was also not as vituperative as many other threads I've seen.

If I had been a moderator (possibly responding to a complaint) I would've performed a cautionary post or moved it to Prac/Tac.

Still, it was locked, not eliminated, and in this new thread we are free to discuss both the subjects of "knife as weapon" and "moderator moderation." :) I'm happy with that.

Karl

Moved to the proper place.

Moving to Service & Support, this is where the site policy discussions go.

I'm not going to second guess Dave. If he felt that the thread needed to be locked down, then it probably did. I won't know for sure until I've had a chance to look it over.

In the meantime, it's tricky to determine where it belonged; yes, stabbing and such is a PracTac issue, at the same time, it's a General topic as well. It's a fine line to cross, and in the end, I'm sticking by Dave's decision.
