I think about this from time to time. get rid of most of my knives and just pick up a few that would fill my needs and eye for design. I started out with customs, then went to antiques and regular production slipjoints, then tried tacticals for a bit. Lost interest in them,(tacticals) because they were not practical for me.The old ones I love, but how many knives do I need? I have to admit that I miss the customs, even though I have only owned four, and seeing all the ones on the forum I sometimes get the urge to sell some off for maybe one or two nice ones from a custom shop, and keep a few of my favorites.

Downsizing, no. I am however, getting rid of tacticals at a brisk pace and not looking back. It's amazing how many people will trade beautiful Case knives for black single blades with thumbstuds.

I have sold of a few in the past with the intention of picking up a custom.
Then after I sold them, The few that I really liked were already sold......

Just yesterday I sold a few. I found something else that I really want to get, and with work slowing down (heck I'm off today and I never have Mondays off) figured it made sense to sell a few in order to get the new one.
That way the cash outlay is minimal....

As far as liquidating most of my knives and only have a select few, that wouldn't work for me. I enjoy them to much.
Part of the fun is the hunt. Its always good to see the mailman show up with a box too :D

I did go through a period a couple years back where I just completely burned out on knives. Carried the same knife most of the time, didn't pull them out to look at them and wasn't searching for any new knives...
Fortunately that didn't last to long....

I am bring at 150-200 knives to the Oregon show this April, and hope to sell a lot of them!
It's definitely time to sell a few.

Think long and hard about it. That knife you never use, that has no special meaning for you. It may have a special meaning after you sell/trade it.

Now, I have to get my bag ready to hold the ones I am taking to trade at two MD shows this weekend.

Where are those people? I got a few tacs i would love to trade for a couple of nice Case knives. lol

I got rid of most of my stuff a few years back. The better half and I deceided we wanted to be less weighted down in our later years. I'm down to only about a half dozen real using knives, and a couple of firearms.

I have considered downsizing. Having too many knives makes me appreciate none of them, really. If I had a couple of EDC folders, a couple of fixed blades and so forth, I think I'd appreciate what I have.

My dad seems to have gotten by just fine for 79 years by owning one slipjoint at a time.

Ditto. Not that I ever had a huge number. I tend to get rid of anything that doesn't get some regular use, and I keep about eight knives. When I get the desire for a different one, I'll try to arrange a swap rather than accumulate more.

modern day knife accumulator, knife collector, knife enthusiast, knife - nut, whatever you consider yourself,or,whatever level you are at with knives,I think most come to a point when he or she has some knives that they either forgot about, lost enthusiasm,or just want to liquidate and or move on

Well, I once thought about a vasectomy and came to the same conclusion about that decision too :D

I am always looking though.......
I like custom kitchen knives,I seem to use these a lot & I keep a few around

I like production slipjoints, mostly I display these I like to look for ,in a production, when I can say, dam, they did this one all like this, for fifty bucks! that's pretty good ! I'll carry a production slipjoint at times when I have to fear losing it that day,for one reason or another .I've been known to give a few away here and there. I keep a few of these around

I like small pocket-able fixed blades, just like'em,they are handy I keep a few of these around

I like custom slipjoints & these I carry.I have & have had from the best. The ones I really like moreso, are made for me by the knifemaker,I like that connection.I keep a few of these around

I have a knife on my keys, and never usually have more than two on me.
If I had to,I could get away with owning one pocket knife,it would be real hard for me to get it down to that, but if I had to I probably could.

I like quality and variety but not necessarily quantity so I really try to keep it to 5 users for EDC rotation. I have maybe 4 or 5 others that were gifts or have some special significance or unique utility that I can't part with but don't necessarily carry often which is a pity.

Keeping the users down to 5 to 7 also helps with deciding which to grab every day without feeling guilty that some are not getting enough pocket time. If I do find that a particular knife just doesn't get the pocket time it deserves, I will either sell it or give it away. I really can't bear to have a knife not being carried or used. Better that someone else give it the care it deserves.

Vince, You could never own just one pocket knife.
duckman,If things keep goin' the way they are I may have two ...;)

texasflyfisher said it good though & too many is NG for a person who carries them.

Downsize? What kind of word is that? What language are you using? Is that a made up word? That certainly isn't an English word or I would know it, I are edjumakated. I wish people would speak a language I could understand if they are going to post here....:p

Your momma needs to wash your mouth out for even thinking that...much less saying it...

:D

The only traditional patterns I've sold or traded were a few Case stockmans and trappers. I'm not a fan of these patterns so they went to new homes. I think this was a grand total of 3 or 4 knives. My small collection of customs (6 so far) will be tough to pry from hands. Same goes for my older Case knives. I do sell or trade non-traditional patterns frequently.
