I don't know about you but seems to me like a lot of new knives are not all that sharp from the factory. I recently had the rare experience of getting a sharp blade right out of the box. Was so sharp I didn't feel anything but realized when I saw the blood that I had been cut

The blade was the Spyderco Manix 2 XL. WOW I really like this blade !

Funny but that was in fact the exact same experience with that same knife. Now it wasn't quite sharp enough to suit me but it was very well done, and will not require a reprofile which I do on just about every production edge I own.

I've never had that from a factory new knife.

The otherday I was putting away one of my knives here at work and felt the blade graze my finger as i closed it.. took a look and thought to myself 'oh, just a little scratch no big deal'...
Started to walk away and felt drips from my finger, sure enough.. sliced it open

I love having my knives sharp, but damn.......

It wasn't factory new. But I did think exactly to myself- might have sai it aloud "DAMN I didn't know you were that sharp!" I said that after I slipped while doing a little polishing. Didn't notice I'd cut myself until I looked down and saw a chunk of my finger on the blade. It was a Bark River STS-8 what bit me.

Emerson mini-commander. The first few times I tried waving out of my pocket I cut myself and didnt realize it.

I've had a select few crazy sharp knives from the factory and all of them have been spydercos. With that said, even the sharpest factory sharpening jobs are usually really not all that sharp. I've never met a factory edge I couldn't improve upon.

It's something i find with all of my stainless blades, they can feel quite blunt to the thumb (unlike carbon blades) but dayum do they cut!

I have this beater POS "Sniper bowie" knife I got as a gift a few years back. I was bored so I started flipping it around when I felt it bite me. The blade had always seemed pretty dull but when I looked down the webbing between my thumb and index finger had been cut open near all the way. That was the last time I ever recklessly played with a knife(Well, played with THAT knife. :D ). ;)

I've NEVER had any new knife come with what I would consider to be even a pretty good edge...not that I mind though, as I sharpen a knife usually within a few minutes of being out of the packaging.

Maybe my expectations are way too high.

I recently reprofiled my GEC #85 ez open bullet end to the point it's reached ludicrous sharpness. So sharp in fact I cut down through all layers of dermis on my forearm with a pushcut during a shave test without feeling the cut at ALL!

I figured it was a Spyderco right away. I hardly ever see a knife that sharp...that isn't.
Congrats to Sal and the boys.

About 5 minutes after recieving my Kershaw OD-2 I went to go shave some hair on my arm, and I knicked my thumb as I moved the knife over to my forearm. I didn't even feel it and saw some red on my carpet and that's when I noticed that I cut myself.

Sharpest new knife I've gotten so far is the Paramilitary 2 I just received. I think it's the sharpest knife I've ever USED.
Push cutting paper was so easy it amazed me...I just sat and sliced for a while. The grind is anything but polished though.
I've had experience of not even feeling the cut till I saw the blood. It gave me a new respect for knives : )
Only a knife knut would describe cutting himself and finish with "I really like this blade" !

Spyderco Native 5 that I just got is extremely sharp from the factory. This S35VN is some nice stuff! Very acute edge for a FFG (although the grind is a bit uneven, whaddya gonna do? I'm loving this knife its very unassuming but F&F are very nice. The back spacer is my favorite part :)

I've noticed the same with many factory edges. They push cut and shave hair with aplomb, but they have no stickiness or bite to their edges. Great push cutters, but poor slicers, in other words.

Would that be because of the polished edge?

Thats been my experiences. Most polished edges will not cut thick twisted poly anchor line either, just seems to roll off the plastic.

I've never had a knife come that sharp, but there was a chisel I picked up that darn near cut my thumb off out of the box.

The ZT 560 I just got. Cut through plastic bag without any snagging at all right out the box. Didn't look like it would be that sharp at all.
