hi all,

I recently tried my hand at making a fairbairn sykes style combat knife.. easier said than done I see now.. the subtle design hides a few pitfalls for the unwary..

The blade is stock removal, 01 tool steel, heat treated e.t.c. Handle is comprised of 4 main parts - carbon steel hilt, pommel & the little bit just after the hilt (no idea what to call it) stacked leather for the handle in between..

anyone else ever tried? I'd be interested to share experience here..

Never tried one (I'm not yet confident enough in my grinding to start with dagger grinds...) but I did find a neat picture from Wikipedia for those that might try:

Thanks for the pic, It (and several others:) are pinned up in my shop at the moment..

last night I believed I had the handle ground to my satisfaction, but decided it was too fat.. started sanding/grounding it down and the results.. well, it'll need more work - got to take out a lot of deep sctratches on the metal sections of the handle.. (I hate that part)

pics coming.. perhaps I'll do a pic by pic progress report on my next f/s style dagger, if anyone's interested..

Meanwhile I've found this thread by ArielSalaverria:

it shows some wonderful work & was a great help to me..
