In regards to earlier threads about what to use the balisong for, here's my most recent experience.

I just came back from four days of camping. Aaaallll by my lonesome. And yes, before anyone asks, it was GREAT!!!

I brought two balisongs with me, both really cheapo, both gotten from local flea markets for the purpose of experimenting and playing and learning, and if necessary, destroying. Let me tell y'all, the bali makes a GREAT campknife, even for cheapos! Here are some things I did with my balis over the four days:

Usual Camp Stuff:
1. Opened cans
2. Shaved wood for kindling
3. Cut rope, duct tape, etc. (nobrainer)
4. Dug up stuff (I was bored)
5. Throwing practice

Not so usual Camp Stuff:
1. Bet a fellow camper I could get my bali out of my pocket and open before he could with ANY knife he had. He had a switchblade in a belt holster. I won. :D Lucky.
2. Knocked a squirrel from a tree. Was gonna cook and eat it, but it recovered quicker than I could catch it. Still, a lucky shot.
3. Tied it to a stick, and tried to use it to spear fish. No lucky shots here, but it was fun.
4. Impressed a biker chick to give me a free ride on her Harley. WOOHOO!

So, the moral here? Bali's are EXCELLENT for camping. I'd still recommend cheap here, just so's you don't tear crap out of your nice blades. YMMV.

Peace, y'all

:D Man, sounds like a great trip. And you're right about balis being a great camping knife. Although I'll have to try the squirrel thing. And my BM42s get no special treatment when I'm out roughing it. They get the crap beat out of them like every other knife I got. What's the point of buying a durable knife if you're never going to use it as a pry-bar? ;)

Ineresting, Biker Chick hmmmmmm.....:p
I made with myfreind too about opening my bali faster than his switch. $10 richer hehe:D

I took my 42s camping about 2 months ago! Your right balis make great camp knives. It has it all cutting power, utility and entertainment:D

Next time take some little Harley stickers to paste on the blade. ;)

You may get a better ride!

Dudley is right, sounds like you had WAY too much fun, and yeah...Balisongs do make a nice camp knife for most type adventures. Many of the "Classic" camp knives (although nice pieces)...are monsters to carry around.

I must respond to this one simply because i also happened to have gone camping this past weekend, and LOVED it!! Allthough i used my commander for most tasks, i did have a BM 35 in my pocket at all times that got to see a little action while cutting cheese and sharpening sticks for marshmellow roasting:D I brought along my normal 42 and 45 in an inverted-v extreme-concealex sheath, but managed to keep those nice and clean. All in all, bali's are deffinately great for camping...as if camping weren't great enough!!

"cutting cheese" Ha, Ha, Ha!!

Hehe, all i could think about was my desktop image, #3 from Gollnick's "Wine and Cheese" shoot. Allthough we didn't have any merlot and the cheese was crackerbarrel, i was pleased:D

Biker chicks? Me, my friend, and our two moto's? Am I the only one who still uses his feet to go camping?

ps- yep. 42's take their share of abuse, though with my min. weight type approach, I don't really do the whole can thing. Fun in the woods, mmmmmm gooooood.

Yeah, actually I do prefer to camp with my feet. In this case, however, it was one of those things where I simply chose a direction, and went, and decided where to stay when I felt like. I used that as a base camp, and headed out to the woods, but not until after I found myself in the midst of a really great motorcycle event, and couldn't resist the temptation.

When I strike out from base camp, OOOH yeah, it's light weight all the way! The cans were for the previous nite's munchies.

Oh, the Biker Chick was about 70 years old, had a pretty leather vest on, and a really well done "Live to Ride, Ride to Live" tattoo on her arm. :D She thought that a big/bald/goatee'd dude like me with a flashing bali was, in her words, "cuter'n sh*t." HAR!

I did also cut cheese, literally and figuratively :p , as well as some polska keilbasa, olive bread, proscuitto, and chantarel mushrooms. I go gourmet, y'all!

And yes, I did truly have WAAAY too much fun, if that's possible.

Pj - sucker for a big Hog and leather

HAR!

While it's true, Hogman, I indeed am a sucker for a Hog, I think I'll leave the leather-thongedness to those of a somewhat more, um, female persuasion...

But who persuaded them to be THAT?? :p
