Ever Wish War Was Still Fought With The Sword And Shield??

I honestly would love that.

I watch movies like the last Samurai and know they had harder lives, but honestly I wouldn't mind living in that era. Your main goal in life is to protect your women and children and practice your craft.

I really hate guns also.

Yes. The swords should be constructed of pvc pipe wrapped in styrofoam padding :)

I think you'll like the Sword Forum.

Heck no are you crazy. OBTW Guns are awesome dont be afraid of them.

"Heck" will have to do in a public forum. But I agree completely with every word of astxsniper's response.

I use knives because they are tools. If I need a weapon, I reach for a shotgun.

There is nothing chivalrous or awesome about killing with a blade. It's just killing.

Ok, i'll stay in the castle with the lovely damsels and pretend to be gay. during attacks, i'll pick you brigands off with an arbalest (with a steel bow and 250 pounds of draw weight), guaranteed to punch through armor past 100 yards.

where do these dead-from-the-neck-up people come from?

Dunno, Rat.

There are two explanations for the desire to live then:

1. Either a complete misunderstanding of the historical reality (wars, especially today, are a lot less lethal and are increasingly fought by volunteers)

2. A misunderstanding of what goes on during combat.

Other than psychosis, there's no other explanation. I, for one, would like to live in less violent time. Based on history, that'd be today.

Don't hate guns. Hate the people that abuse them. BTW, warfare was not fought with swords. It was fought with long knives, battle axes, spears, maces, bows and arrows and lots of blood, sweat and tears. Only the wealthy had swords. And the vikings...

F-NO, there is no way I would lead my men into battle with swords against other people with swords. We have rifles and machine guns, and dang nammit we are going to use them. Swords have gone the way of the dinosaur in wars, and that is a good thing.

Thanks for the realism - if anyone went back in time, I think it would not be long and they would be begging to come back. With average life spans in the 40's & infant mortality rates near 50% it was no picnic. Not to mention 1% of the entire population dying from the flu (1918) or needing medical care and the watching the doctor (or barber) pull out a scalpel that hasn't been cleaned in 12 years. I think it's natural to yearn for the good old days, but overall a human life has more value now than ever in history.

And I love guns.

REAL liberty began when ranged weapons became powerful enough when Joe Peasant could skewer (crossbow) or blast (arquebus) expensively armed and armored (at Joe Peasant's expense) aristocrat/noble/knight/samurai out of his high-horse saddle--and Joe could do with with minimum training time

The longbow was the greatest revolution in midieval warfare. Thank the Chinese for gunpowder.

I know I do, but what does everyone else think??

Not really.

In my youth, I sought out and read (some after translation) contemporary accounts of melees in those 'good old days.'

Not my idea of fun...or of honor. People were hacked apart with dull crow-bars and left to die on the field. The lucky ones eventually received a coup-de-grace -- and it really was a 'grace' for them.

I've been to war -- modern war. And that was bad enough for me.
