Greetings all!

Here is my follow up thread on how the EDS (Every Day Shaver) worked straight from Tom and the regrind. My micrometer says that this one is 0.005 behind the edge.

Here is my new EDS next to my two previous models. The new one is the Atlantic Salt that Tom reground for me. The middle one is a Native Lightweight that I did a high hollow grind that came out very well. It came out to 0.016 behind the edge and worked well as a shaver.

I did nothing to this edge for the first side of my face. Tom called me the day after I got the package and asked how the first shave went. I had not taken the “glamour” shots that I wanted to so I told him I would get a thread up about it on Friday. Tom used a finer belt on the edge of my Atlantic Salt because he knew what I planned to use it for when it got back to me. So this edge was a 600 grit belt and them polished the way he normally does his edges. As usual Tom’s edge was very sharp and swept the hair right off of my arm. I will say that the first side shave was less comfortable than I am accustomed to at this time. Here is the first side set of pictures.

I admit I was glad when that side was completed. I decided if the shave was not comfortable after once side, I would try stropping the edge that Tom provided. Here are three shots of the stropping. First one is the back of an old belt charged with Green Chrome, the next is an untreated strop combo with a really supple untreated surface that was a gift that a good friend gave me. It is from a shaving store in or near Harrisburg, PA.

The second side of my face was more comfortable. It was not as smooth as it will be once I really refine the edge through the Spyderco bench stones and my assortment of strops. Here is the second side and throat.

Nice! 600 grit from Tom is wickedly sharp but definately not ideal for face shaving. Working through the grits to Spyderco UF and stripping should be impressive. I just got in more 1 micron, .3 micron, and .05 micron lapping film that I use to get that last bit of sharpness out of a blade, but a strop with fine grit paste works great too, of course. I can't wait for the post sharpening update.

Are you measuring right on the edge shoulder or up the blade just a tad? I know my knives from Tom come back right around where he says, but I use calipers and measure right on the transition from the bevel to the main grind. Even measuring the slightest bit behind the actual bevel makes the thickness readings go up a decent bit. After a few full bevel sharpenings you can definately notice increased thickness in knives on the calipers, but on the regrinds the thickness doesn't go up nearly as fast as on factory grinds with sharpening. Sharpening with power tools will definately increase the thickness much quicker than using stones, especially if you microbevel.

Hi Mike,

I took another mic reading on the EDS and you are right. It is 0.005 of an inch. I must have been more behind the edge than I was at the edge.

Take care,

Doug

It looked thinner in the pics, so .005" makes sense and should be a great EDS edge thickness.
