Every knife I own has a purpose except...

I have a couple of EDC's a spyderco and a benchmade.
I have a deer skinner and a camp knife from OTK.
I have a couple of traditionals for more discreet Sunday morning carry.
So on and so forth, but I just bought my first knife that really serves no real world purpose for me. It's a ronin dojo pro model #14 katana. It arrived last Thursday and since then I've become a cardboard obliterating fruit ninja. I've also cut a few tennis balls in half on the fly. Everyone I show the sword to said the same thing. That's awesome, what did you buy it for?

Anyone else have a blade they can't justify a real need for but you had to have anyway?

Waved karambit. The cutting I regularly do won't ever benefit from a hawkbill/karambit blade shape. It's completely useless but OhMyGodItOpensWhenIPullItOutItIsSoMuchFun!

Not everything has to have a purpose.

The most pressing example of this is jewelry. Men always have to justify their knife purchases. I need it for camping, or for opening packages etc... We always feel like we have to Justify our purchase.

Now let's look at every woman's favorite, jewelry. What does it do? The answer is nothing. It has no purpose. It looks pretty and that's it.

If women don't need to logically justify their jewelry purchases, then men should not have to with their knife purchases either. Maybe you're Katana just looks pretty.

Please feel free to use this logic to justify buying future knives.

I have a Gerber MK II that serves no real life purpose other than pleasing me when I play with it. There are others but that one comes to mind first.

Just bought a Lil' Matriarch and for the life of me, I can't understand why. I have no other serrated blades and honestly have no use for serrations. But you know what? This knife is flat-out cool. I doubt I'll ever sell it.

My large sebenza.

my small does everything I need it to, I got the large because people say 'its everything you want', bs haha.

collects dust mostly other than when I want to play with it.

I bought the sword, then text my wife to let her know there would be a debit on the account before she did her daily balance check. ( hazard of her working on a computer all day)
Asking forgiveness is easier than permission especially if you know the answer is NO.

I can't justify any of the blades I own. I buy them because I like them and the reason I buy them is because they carry specific things that I like about them (manual opener, full Ti handles, to name a few things I like).

Na not me, I would never buy something like that. :D.

I use this quite often. (Never know when you might need to dag someone :D)

Or this one when I tend bar.

This one came together quite well. Useful when I need a fleam for some blood letting or need to pick a horse's hoof. It is made by Ken Erickson and won best folder at the 2012 Blade show.

Not sure if a congressman would be very happy, if I walked in to meet them with this in my pocket. As I understand things, they like cash :)

This might be a good tool for chopping concrete blocks.

Nothing wrong with the occasional knife purchase just because you like the knife. Just stay within a reasonable budget. None of us really need some of the stuff we spend money on.

Pretty much me, especially manual opener, Ti handles. But I could justify 5 or 6 out of my 50 or so.
Cheers

Truth be told, I probably could get along without 40 or 50 of my approximately 60 blades... but I enjoy them all.

I've been thinking about buying a sabre for no better reason than nostalgia. Well, or perhaps horse cavalry will come back after the Zombie Apocalypse.

Cold Steel Gladius machete. Everything else has a purpose, i just wanted a cheap sword to chop stuff with :) similar to how you use your sword haha.

I bought the Cold Steel XL Espada just to see the expression on my co-workers face when shows off his latest 'killer blade' (note: he is a flea-market aficionado and his 'amazing knives' are all cheap, Chinese and Pakistani crap) ... so one morning he walks into my office to show me his latest 'score' - a huge saber-folder with a golden tiger etched on the blade... which is nearly 4" long... and I stand up and pull the XL Espada from my desk drawer and say... "That's not a knife... THIS is a knife" (in my best Aussie accent...) his eyes got real big and he asked me if I was planning to kill someone with that knife... and I said "No, but now that you mention it..." then we both had a laugh... (he still thinks his junk knifes are just fine... even though he has to replace them monthly...

Since I've got my basic knife needs well covered, in the past couple of years I've began to add knives to my collection just because I like them regardless of their true usefulness. A good example would be the Spyderco Shabaria, weird blade shape, uncomfortable handle, but it appeals to me.

All of my blades have the same purpose - to give me happiness each and every time I fondle them.... :D
