I run into something like this. Plan for today, was to run some 4X4 trails, and then when deep in the Ocala NF, do some hiking.

SO.......... I reached into the tool box, and got out the Wetterlings ax. Made one or two half hearted attempts, and then said "no way". I found another trail to travel on.

Got in a good hike, ate lunch, put up a tarp and took a nap, then drove home. Great day. Life is good!

The idea of hiking, eating, putting up a tarp and taking a nap, then heading home greatly appeals to me. A relaxing and perfect afternoon. Mike

Mike, year back, and a few months, I had one of those 'widow maker' heart attacks. I am getting back into the woods now, not only building up my strength, but my confidence in being alone in the woods. It has been a journey, but yes, it WAS a relaxing, and perfect afternoon. :)

that would be tough w/ an axe :)

I carry a Sven (21" one) folding saw in my truck, it can buck up some rather large trees in a pinch (not quite as easy as 24" Husky though :D)

Sam, congratulations on your come back and I'm glad you are still with us. That must have been severely traumatic to say the least. I think the prescription is for more afternoons like this one and take care in between. We look forward to some more pictures of relaxing afternoon hikes. Mike

Good call on leaving it there and enjoying the woods. Give your heart good steady exercise and leave the intense work for when you are close to help if you need it. No need to prove anything.

Oh man, been there. You get the feeling you were lazy, then you realize it just wasn't the path to take that time.. I miss exploring trails

I feel your pain!!

Several years ago we had a terrific wind storm while we were in Elk camp. We had to chain saw over a dozen downed trees to get out; some over 30" in diameter. Fortunately, we had 2 good saws so it went pretty quick ----- but rolling the pieces off the road was still a lot of hard work.

Looks like that tree was intentionally cut across the road. Makes you wonder why someone didn't want people back in there. Mysteries/questions like this eat away at me until I've answered them or substantially explained them to myself to quell all my curiosity!

Good that you didn't let it ruin your plans but you may want to consider what you would do if it was a different situation. What if it was late and you were leaving the area or were leaving because of a medical emergency? In addition to an axe I have found a quality rope to be a helpful item on several occasions.

No way would that little axe work, it would take forever.

A 36 inch plumb with a 4 pound head would have you throuh it in no time

Some times trials are closed like this on purpose when there are redundant trails in the area that lead to the same place. Or its just florida meth cookers, one or the other.

Sam you're really lucky, my FIL had one and if he hadn't made it to the hospital when he did it would have been all she wrote...
I say its time to get a winch on your rig

take care,
rob

I used to not mind such trees with even a small axe, but not digging them so much these days :)

The area looks nice. I have been thinking about hitting the Ocala national forest for some of my work since I have an aunt who lives in Ocala.
