Everyday carry purpose

Hello Group,

I have a curious question for all. What is the primary reason why you carry? Is it for defense, work related chores or some other reason?

I’ll start the topic off by given my reasons. The purpose for me is personal defense. The type of knife I carry depends on the time of the year and clothes I am wearing. For summer I carry a small folder clipped to the front pocket. When long pants are required I carry a larger folder inside the waistband.

At work. . .I carry 4 blades. 2 purposes ~ defensive/offensive and as a tool (i.e., utility). . .

Not at work. . .it's a tool. And they're cool !

Hi Arlo. In Ohio, we aren't allowed to carry concealed deadly weapons for self-protection. So I carry my Sifu for cutting bagels, coupons, the odd string, and for impressing friends with my sharp collectable SE D2 w/o fingergrooves.

My blue Delica can cut things too, and my old serrated Endura pool knife can saw through things if necessary. (Some day soon I'll sharpen it!) You never know when you might get a finger or toe stuck in a pool grate; best to be safe.

I'm actually quite safe and I still have all my fingers and toes.

If I ever AM attacked, I would call a time-out and dial 9-1-1 on my cell phone. I would never dream of using my knives, MagLites, one pound hand weight or Canemasters cane to hurt an "errant."

Legally yours,

Karl

I've carried a knife on my person every day since my 7th birthday. My parents gave me a Kamp King brand jack knife (pocket knife, depending upon where you live), and I've had a knife in at least one of my pockets ever since.

As a former LEO I don't really view knives as practical for self-defense. They are, however, excellent tools for every day use. You never know when you'll find yourself in a situation where a knive will come in handy.

I never know what the purpose will be for the knife I carry on any particular day. I always have a big, securely locking folder on my person. Sometimes the purpose ends up being just glad I know it is there. This is one of the reasons why I stopped carrying Chisel ground Tantos and Spydie Civilians/Matriarchs. Their versitily factor is low. That is a real disadvantage when one doesn't know what they'll need a knife for.
If your primary purpose is self defense, get a gun! I have a CCW and 9mm Kahr P9 in my pocket unless I am going to get on an airplane.
Knives are great things, but not particulary good for self defense.Of course not everybody lives in "shall issue" states, and a knife may be the best substitute.
The bottom line is, the purpose of my knife changes daily, so I try to carry knives that have a grat deal of purpose-flexability. A Carnivore, BM 705,710 or Griptilian always seems to fit the bill.

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded from a Spyderco Delica to a Gunting. I only carry it for selfpreservation.

I carry a plain edge Delica for anything and everything.

I carry my serrated Cricket for boxes, rope, string, removing slivers...

I carry my Ladybug for sheeple friendlyness, I still get odd looks opening it(drop open, from keychain).

I also have a multi-tool, stainless, for a impromptu hammer for biking, as well as it's true purpose.

For any SD role, I carry either a 5" bootknife(I wear jungleboots), or a 4" paratrooper.

My knifes are simply tools, with uses to suit the blade types.

My 2 EDC folders (not counting the Leatherman Micra) are my 2 REKATs:

A Carnivour Cub (stonewashed ATS-34, black G-10 scales)...This is my "utility/cut everything" knife.

A Sifu (stonewashed D-2E, black G-10 scales),OR (depending on the "knife-laws" of the place I'm going to visit), a Carnivour (stonewashed ATS-34, black G-10 scales)...This is my "defensive/offensive" folder.

I carry a handgun for self defense. Unless I was some martial arts expert, me pulling a knife in self defense would be a major mistake.

I carry a knife for utility. That would be a Night Vision.

At work....heck, I have knives all over the place. I have several fixed blades in various drawers. I have six Air-SOG's (my #1 general purpose desk knife) on duty around my desk. I always have about six other knives ON my desk (an assortment of fixed and folders) to play with while in meetings or while on the phone (I always need something in my hand...don't you?

). Then, there is the sample case with one of every model we carry next to my desk.

I primarly use my knives for food prep and utility chores. Food prep, by far, accounts for most of my daily knife useage. I use my EDC's in the kitchen to the exclusion of kitchen knives, though I do use a Rinaldi TTKK, BM Nimravus and a Busse in the kitchen at times.
I would say the vast majority of all my food prep is done with a Spyderco Military.
I also recognize that a knife can be an extremely effective defensive weapon and try choose my EDC's so that they are useable as such (to the extent that a folder can be).
Due to my occupation I carry a firearm most of the time, there are times, however, that carrying a weapon is not possible (certain court houses, Govt. buildings, swimming, at the beach, at my kids' school, etc) I am never without a knife, never.
Stay sharp,
Chad

I carry a Mini-AFCK for anything that might come up. Mostly use it on packaging and stuff, but I could use it for self defense if I fail to reason with them or my feet are too slow running. I don't care about sheeple reactions, I figure it helps desensitize them.

I usually carry a small folder (almost always the toad) for small jobs and a mid-size folder for anything that calls for it. Right now, this folder is a mini-CQC-7B but I have this feeling that things will be changing in a week when I have my Sebenza!
Matt

I've got to practice saying that: For anything that comes up. Yeah. That's why I carry. I carry a big folder/tactical in my right front pocket, a medium, utility knife in my left front pocket, a small utility folder in my right rear pocket, and a neck knife. For whatever comes up. That's it. That's why.

Well, lately I've been carrying a Sebenza in my right front pocket. Not sure it rates being called tactical, but usually the knife there is. Just haven't gotten the Sebbie out of my pocket since the knife show. Keeps jumping in there, for whatever comes up. You know, things come up.

I’m a purely utilitarian kind of kind. I carry a Camillus 154CM EDC with me at all times for stuff like box cutting, package opening, cable tie cutting, and wire stripping. The big belly on the blade is also perfect for spreading butter and cream cheese. Sheeple take well to the EDC where they wouldn’t to many similar shaped knives.

I’ll also be carrying my new Benchmade 730 during my off hours when I have larger projects and trips to the city. I’m thinking that the 730 should play a pretty good dual role as big cutter and big mugger detractor.

My weekend trips to the mountains always include my BG-42, partially serrated Buck110. This gets used hard for camp repairs, rope cutting, big fish cleaning, just about anything you could imagine in the outdoors. I’m sure that my Benchmade could be used for the same tasks, but I have this trust thing going with the 110, and that BG-42 is simply amazing. If I had to trust one of my knives with my life, it would be my Buck.

Self defense, mostly, but also, I just feel wrong if I don't have one. Like I'm walking around without clothes...
