Everyday carry questions?

Hello,

I need some suggestions regarding how and what to use for my everyday user/carry pieces (out of my current inventory of knives) I am wondering If I am missing something or am I on the right track.

During work (public school) I have in the past only carried a true "pocket knife" like a Case or similar. Anything else is out of the question. Probably will go with a new case russlock for the everyday carry at work. After all it is a Case like grandpa used. Any other type or brand of knive is out. The suburbanites here don't understand. I am comfortable with this, done it for 15 years.

As soon as I hit the car I am currently sliding my first love (now have two of them) A MT mini SOCOM inside my belt/outside the waist tilted with the clip under the belt loop on my pants. Visable but very low key and not a problem here in Missouri. I feel comfortable carrying everywhere else like this.

Now I want something a little more substantial.

Problem.... I have a MT LCC manual, a BM 730, and I am ordering an Al Mar SERE 2000 and MT SOCUM Elite manual. These are large knives. I want to carry them! I love them, however, I don't like the pull on the pants when carried on the front pocket. Should I go inside waist band (not as comfortable as the way I carry the mini socom) I don't like back pocket carry, The LCC is great but heavy! Of course I am spoiled by the weight of the MT mini socom.

Any suggestions? How have you all coped with large folder carry? Does it take time to get used to?

Thanks

Stuff it in your pocket and spend an hour at the knife store/gun shop/ book store/ whatever store you are interested in. You will forget about the size. I carry 4" blade length folders and I wouldn't want to go any smaller really. If I bought a SIFU I'd go to Chapters and go book shopping. In no time I'd have a new EVERYDAY carry knife!

You'll pretty much get used to just about any type of carry, eventually.

For me, outside of work, it's whatever I happen to choose that day clipped onto my jeans. That's my preferred method. Additionally, when out and about on the weekends, I'll go with some small fixed blade in a neck sheath. Virtually invisible under a sweater or even a dress shirt.

However, when I'm at work- the land of the sheeple- I'll take something small like my CRK Umfaan and drop it in the pocket of my Dockers. And on occasion, if I'm feeling saucy- I'll clip a WH CF Lancet next to a mechanical pencil in my shirt pocket. With it's attractive clip- nobody ever thinks twice about it.(they can't imagine THAT would be on any knife)

If I were in your situation, I'd probably pick up a CF Lancet, and start wearing it everywhere I could, clipped into a shirt pocket, to get people used to seeing it. If a Case style knife is OK, then this certainly should be.

Or, I'd have a nice kydex neck sheath made up for that mini SOCOM of yours, and carry it under my shirt.

Anyway- I'm rambling, so there you go- FWIW.

Welcome to the forum Commodorefirst,

As to your ?? I feel you're on the right track. For me the iwb carry just right of center at the first belt loop, knife tilted inboard at angle so clip goes into belt loop secured and much obscured by belt. Been carrying this way for years...so kinda ingrained habit...any other carry seems ackward or heavy. Bout the only blade I have to carry different is a really large folder, the sifu. For this big puppy I still carry iwb, but for this one I carry it on left side of center, with knife canted outboard at a more horizontal angle, again clip going thru belt loop behind belt. For a righthander both these carries make for a good smooth quick draw, well concealed and protected from wandering eyes or more. YMMV cause we're all built different and have different needs. Btw the small Case still ALWAYS goes in the small watch pocket in my jeans for everyday chores and helps with those that need to see a 'normal' ?? knife. Course for me the bm710, spydie Shabaria, or Sifu is about as normal as it gets.

Take time to get used to carrying a larger knife like the LCC. Clipped into the front right pocket of jeans, it really carries very well. Dropped into the pocket of dress pants, it can be a bit of a load. Inside the waistband, it's really not bad once you acclimate to it. Obviously, smaller knives are easier, but if the larger blade fits the bill, go for it. The smooth, contoured lines of the LCC make for surprisingly carry for a big knife. Good luck!

I also prefer the inside-the-waistband location. The clip is concealed by the belt, and the S. Elite I carry rides low enough to be almost undetectable to others.

On the other hand, it's almost impossible not to be felt by its wearer. For me, any place I put a 4.5 oz, 5" long piece of metal, I'm going to notice - at first anyway. As suggested above however, wear it every day and it doesn't take long until you'll have to brush your hand over it to confirm it's there. You will acclimate very quickly. Jack

I carry a MT LCC everyday and i assure you that you wouldn't feel that it's there if you're wearing jeans. I clip mine at the front pocket. Wearing dress pants is another matter, but i still carry the LCC. It's just a matter of getting used to.

My Al Mar S2K is a little lighter but it's a little thicker than the LCC. So carrying it IWB is more uncomfortable than the LCC. Although the long clip gives it a more secure hold when carrying it IWB.

The Socom Elite is perfect for carry, for this size of a folder. Light, thin and the clip is just right. Although i haven't tried to carry mine yet since i haven't got tired of my MT LCC.

Welcome to the forums! What part of MO are you in? I am in Springfield. I carry the LCC everywhere. I used to carry the lightweight Native, so the LCC is quite a bit heavier. I got used ti it very quickly and now I don't notice the weight. Best knife around. That is not just my opinion it is the truth!

Commodore,
You said public school, as in classroom teacher? If so, we have something in common as I am also. I carry a Crawford Kasper (large) at school. In the past I have carried the knives you mentioned and more. I have not had a problem doing so. Of course I DON'T advertise the fact that I have such a large knife. The Crawford has titanium handles and is thin enough and sits deep enough to not be noticable. I found that the SERE was the best deep carry knife I have and I ocassionly will carry it. I am a BIG fan of the SERE 2000, as I think this is one of the best production knives on the market today.

Well there you go. My $.02 worth. Carry as big a knife as you can comfortably carry and stuff in your pocket, AND get away with!

Yes artsig1 I am in front of students a few hours everyday, and I use my knife nearly every other day in front of them to assist with instrument repairs etc. I can't use my big blades (there all coated and combo edge anyway) without raising an eyebrow. The smaller pocket knives don't raise an eyebrow. The students can't even carry any pocket knives but since I'm a teacher/administrator - hence an adult, I can. I have never had a problem.

I also use the knife every day to open 3-4 boxes of materials and supplies. Being a dept. chair I am responsible for inventory of all of the books and supplies that are ordered. The knife is out all the time. Once again a reason not to use the big boys. I am fine with this.

Thanks for everyones comments regarding carrying the larger blades after work. I will probably rotate between all of my blades to see which works best. I am very weight minded so maybe the SOCOM might be the best first try. I already carry a small flashlight in one pocket, a small knife in the other at work and everywhere else. Starting to get heavy!

Thanks for all the posts. More always welcome. p.s. bteel I live in suburbs of St. Louis.

I recently, yesterday, picked up a Sere 2000 and was rather concerned regarding carry. The size is substantial, but thanks to recent posts, I have switched to front carry and find that it almost disappears behind an 1 1/2" belt. I immediately forgot that I was carrying. I need to work on my nice shiny clip, but the knife sits nice and deep, without making itself known to others. Anyway, thanks all for your suggestions
