Mistwalkers thread inspired me..........practising skills in inclement weather.

Muscle Memory. Lets develop our WSS muscle memory and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!

Your Mission for the next two months, is to practice the following skills every time you go for a dayhike or extended hike into the great wilderness. The goal is to practice every chance you get, over and over and over again, under all kinds of weather conditions, and under duress (tired, drunk, wet, cold, hungry etc)

- start a fire using firesteel or flint/steel, bow, fireplough, etc
- build a shelter, using local materials
- purify water by sediment filtering using natural materials and then boiling

along the way, log your progress and any problems you experienced, take pics and post the results and photos up here.

It goes without saying that when practicing skills under duress, to have a partner standing by...SAFETY FIRST!

Here in CA with the fires that are raging about 30 miles from my house. If i would even think of practicing fire in the outdoors i might get shoot first and no one would even ask Qs later. It seems someone dicided to set another fire and burn the Angeles forest yet again.... If i see someone playing with fires out there i just might beat him with a stick myself lol....

I like this edict, Bushman5. I've been waiting for the weather to cool a bit so I can head back out to the wilderness. Now that summer's edge has lifted from my area, I plan to get out on the weekends, as my university homework load allows. Having three, specified skills to practice will help me focus the time.
Of course, local considerations (like drought and fires) and safety (like having someone with you) need be taken into account.
The timing of this directive, though, is great. Winter will soon be here, so shelter building, fire starting and water collecting are great things to be fully proficient with.

I like the philosophy behind this challenge. I'll give it a shot! The great thing about BF is, we get to see points of view from all over the world. I look forward to seeing this challenge executed in different environments.

today i filtered river water with a bandanna and boiled it on my MSR Reactor stove. No nasty viruses. bacteria for me!

Ha! For the next two months, I'm tring to avoid anything relating to "Fire", including "firefights":D I think all the water over here is non-potable, so filtering is a good idea...I have my MIOX but we also get plenty of bottled water. Does a bunker get credit for a shelter:D

Can't wait to get back...we'll be moving in December to GA, so I'm looking forward to some green and cooler weather. These are good challenges Bushman!
