Everything I've always wanted to know about grinder motors...

Here's the deal - I'm looking to get a 1.5hp variable speed motor for a Bader B3-like 2"x72" belt grinder for knifemaking. That's all well and good except for one thing - I know nothing about motors.

Please tell me exactly what I need to be looking for - voltage, RPM's, type of speed controller, etc... Remember, I'm an idiot when it comes to these things so no detail is too small. Any links to online sources would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe this summer I can make one! Good luck...I will be picking your brain about the same question, so take good notes.

Kelly, look for a 1.5 hp DC motor, totally enclosed fan cooled(TEFC).3450 rpm and 220 volt if possible.Motors run better on 220 than 110 volts, also at half the amp draw.Leeson makes a good setup with motor and controller, but others are available.Check out Grainger's.Hope this helps,Dave

unless you are already wired for 220v you my want to wait. i am a full time maker and do just fine with a 110 v baldor variable speed on my hardcore machine. if you are building your own grinder what i did at first is found a 1hp 110v 1750 rpm and used step pulleys to make it a variable speed. this was a used motor i found for $45.00 vs hundreds for the kind menteioned in the previous post. it depends on how deep you want to dive in plus how deep your pockets are. also this motor was not sealed i just blow aLL THE GRINDING DUST OUT WITH MY COMMPRESSOR. it has worked fine for years

I upgraded my Burr King 960 with a 1 1/2 HP variable motor and controller that I got from K&G a few years ago for around $350 as I recall. It was absolutely the best investment I have ever made in my knifemaking.

I just purchased another one.
I got it from Mick Koval.
I like Mick because he will wire the motor and leave a 10 ft cord for the 220 on the other side tune the controller before you get it. Its ready out of the box (have to ask him to do the wiring and make it a part of the purchase )
As for motors yes a 3450 dc 1.5 hp leeson with a miniark controller works for me . I have three of them. I blew a controller up one day years a go . For 80 bucks they had me a replacment in one day.

Get 220-240 volts . As stated above it takes less amperage to run them . The motors run better and cooler for hard use.

There are other good motors out there to .
Baldor is great.
