Evolution of "Wave" feature

My three favorite Emersons are very different.

One is a 2000 Commander which has a smallish kind of pointy sharpish "Wave" on it.
Another is a brand new CQC-10 satin with swedge which has a rather large and very radiused (rounded) wave feature.

Another is my mini CQC-7.

As much as I love them all, I gotta say that the newer "wave"s are SO MUCH better than the old "Wave"!

I can barely get the older knife out of my pocket while sitting down without it opening. It's "Wave or else!" And, frankly, it doesn't wave that well out of the pocket (despite years of owning Waves) and tears up my pockets.

The newest knife - the CQC-10 - has a much larger "Wave feature" and is better in many ways. I can slip it out of my pocket while seated better because the "wave" is radiused and not sharp. It also "waves" much more reliably from my pocket and doesn't wear out my pocket. Actually, I've experienced no damage at all.

For comparison, I also have a recent mini-CQC7 that's more like the modern CQC-10 than the old Commander. It's a little less radiused and slightly smaller in the "wave" and I've still had only good results. It seems like the wave on this one was designed for this particular knife.

I have to say that I really appreciate the very tiny changes that have been made in the "Wave feature" over the years and adapted for the different sizes. Those tiny changes have made a big difference in reliability and my pants budget. Those tiny changes have certainly added to my enjoyment and ease of use of my various Emersons for the various uses I use them for and eliminated my irritations.

I think the Spyderco Wave models are done the best. The hook on those are huge and always work when you want it to. The Emerson ones are a little more subtle so it takes more practice to get it right.

I think Emerson's seen that the Spyderco variation of the wave has something going for it.

I always thought it'd be a great idea to have just a large wave that flared out, no hole, disks etc. It would flare out like the Spyderco "Cobra hood." That way you essentially have a disk and wave combined, less pieces, more streamlined. Too bad it'd be much more difficult to make.

i've had knives with the larger waves and with the smaller waves and with proper technique the difference is small if any imho, maybe the pants could make a diff?
