..........as done by John W. Smith is quite the piece! I'm talking about the large Evolution framelock that he builds.
As many know I'm quite a fan of anything marked JWS. I've really, and I mean REALLY, toned down my knife buying over the past 6 to 8 months and really should have probably let this one go on by, but just couldn't. The handle shape coupled with a 3.75" blade that has a long false edge just caught my attention.
After a month with this knife I can say I'm totally satisfied. Quite a statement coming from me!! But I wanted to let some time slide by before I posted about this knife.
Starting with the handle, it has a couple of finger grooves that really help to keep your hand in place when gripping the knife. The slightly squared off rear means that the handle width is about the same from front to rear so upon gripping the knife you have a definate handful. I like the way John uses the carbon fiber to make overlays that slightly round the grip and make the knife very comfortable in the hand. At it's thickest point it mics out at .70 inches and has a total length of 5.0 inches. The nearly full titanium backspacer is EXACTLY to my liking!
The blade is 3.75 inches in length and mics out at .150 inches, beefy as I like 'em to be, and is constructed of S30V steel. It is a recurve, but with a "pointier" tip than other JWS's I've had. The long false edge helps that out. Ambi disc for opening and butter smooth opening are standard trademarks from John and are present in this piece.
Lockup is via the framelock method and lockup on this one is as solid as any knife I've ever had. The titanium mics out at .120 inches and when opened about 1/2 of that covers the blade tang. As I've found the case to be on other framelocks by John, the lock is stiffer than most due to being cut shorter and it takes a little more effort to move over for unlocking, not much, but it is the way I like the lock to be set up.
Fit and finish is standard JWS. That says it all!!
Also want to note that I have a total of two, yes TWO knives in my collection now ( not counting a couple of various slipjoints I carry for those "can I borrow a knife" times ) and am as happy as a pig in slop. Remember now, I was the new knife a week guy who would come on the forums and gush over this knife or that knife!!
I figure I have the bases covered with the JWS as my edc and alternate it with the Camillus Aftermath when I feel like carrying "LARGE"
Still like to see what you other folks are carrying and the new knives that come out but just never realized how my perspectives could change so quicly and that I could be satisfied with only a couple of knives!
Go figure!
