Since I had the whole day off today, I figured I'd get a first person fix and play some Half-Life 2. Very cool game, great graphics, great sound, and very realistic (especially interaction with characters, even if I want to crowbar that Alyx girl for that creepy look followed by an awkward silence she gives you after saying something). So anyway, I was having a blast locking my computer up by setting the gravity gun to be able to haul around objects with a mass designation of 200,000 or so and lifting up cars and tanks, when I finally decided to go retro and play some Half-Life 1. After all, I had been the lucky recipient of the sweet $90 Collector's version with the t-shirt. So I start the game, and I have to say that being able to choose chapters was most gratifying (no more annoying 9 minute tram session), but I noticed the sound for the "Anomalous Materials" lobby sounded a little different. Anyway, some "impulse 101" and "god" later and my gauss gun was whizzing away and aimed on a frizzy-haired scientist. I let go, and to my surprise instead of exploding in a comical fountain of gib as I had seen from years ago he simply flew across the room with a little blood and with a lot of ragdoll-realism.
Don't get me wrong, the rag-doll thing is cool, but is there any way to get a little more blood and guts into this version of HL-1, or am I going to have to try to salvage my badly scratched original version
I tried (in both HL-1 and 2) the violence_agibs 1 thing, but I'm assuming it was already given a value of 1 and I can't increase the gore that way.
If there's no way to do this, no big deal, I'll just install the regular version too.
By the way, I didn't realize until a few days ago the awesome feature of Steam that allows you to operate all of the games without a CD. Very convenient, and the Steam engine seems to be a step in the right direction.
