I started carrying my Benchmade folders again Griptilian and 530 ,and cant believe the results Im getting(how easy it takes hair whittling toothy edge without any real effort at all),and they hold that edge well.Even on dmt coarse sharpener, they both whittle hair, and cut like crazy.I can sharpen other steels well too,but this and Spydercos s30v take some of the best edges Ive seen.

You would be blown away by super blue, cruwear, and M4.

154cm is good steel, it works best with a coarse edge and seems to take abuse well. At higher hardness it will walk circles around a lot of advanced alloys but most are softer around 58 HRc. Its more user friendly at the lower hardness, at higher hardness it's more challenging to sharpen because of its high Carbide content.

I would agree with DBH though, especially with M4 steel, that stuff gets sharp!

I get very good edges on benchmades' 154cm and spydercos' s30v, but find them nowhere near the same to sharpen.
To me, s30v from both benchmade and spyderco even sharpen and wear different.

I sharpened an old Buck Rush in 154 CM a few days ago. I forgot how nice it is to sharpen. 154 CM is yesterday's news, but it's still a great all-around blade steel.

Similar experience with bench made 154 cm. I could get a hair whittling edge on my Grip with just a 1000 grit King waterstone. Haven't been able to with other steels, but only tried a couple.

I don't have 154cm, but Spyderco VG10 tends to burr heavily. Light touch with correct abrasive (DMT EEF in my case) edge leading with light clean up with green over endgrain cardboard works better for me after trying various methods.

Jason,

Any good advice for Spyderco VG10 folder?

Chris,

Spyderco VG-10 is fairly soft compared to other VG-10 so the burr issue is exaggerated. My go to set for sharpening soft stainless is the Chosera 400 and Naniwa 2k Green Brick, the Green Bricks polishing ability and soft surface allow for easier burr removal and produce a very nice edge on VG-10. I have also been using my Shapton Glass 500 and 2k recently on my Endura in VG-10, it's a little harder to remove the burr because the stones cut more aggressively but with a light touch I can get a fairly clean edge that only needs a light stropping. Overall, waterstones are my answer for softer steels.

I can get 154cm from benchmade sharper than vg10 from spyderco,I do not know why,but that is the case.

My 154CM Benchmades take wicked keen edges and hold them fairly well. I run them at 20-per-side on my SharpMaker with great results. I get them to a pretty high polish running up through the hones from diamond to extra-fine using light pressure, keeping scratches to a minimum as I go. I haven't bothered putting any of them on the EdgePro.

I only have three VG10 knives--two of them Spydercos. The only one that's seen much use is my orange Endura4 that's in my pocket at camp in Vermont for obvious reasons. I'm not much of a fan of that steel as it seems to roll and deform easily. I got a big chip in my Endura's blade by carving out a knot in spruce and spent a lot of time and steel getting rid of that bad spot on the EdgePro.
