excess BlackT coat or improper application? - new Emerson

As i was getting my new Emerson La Griffe out of the bag yesterday, I noticed that my hands were getting, well, gray/black. Noticed the same on the little breakaway chain.

I assume this was some excess coating and that it is normally found on new items.

Correct assumption or a faulty knife? Anybody else notice the same?

i would think its just new and it'll stop doing this after a few days of handling, IIRC i have had a couple due this to a mild degree.
 
Not unusual. Rub it all down with a little mineral oil and wipe it dry. (I like to fondle new knives. :) )
