Hi everyone, I've got about 30 folders, none what you'd call a custom but nice anyway. Out of those I still want to keep or use regularly about 10. I was looking at the next few that I'll probably buy last nite. Does anyone here have knives that are just taking up space, you don't use, don't see youself realy wanting them anymore, feel like you shouldn't part with them, but want to buy the latest and greatest making others obsolete, taking up more space...I've started to give some away o friends and relatives who I'm not sure have the same appreciation as I, is there a salvation army for knives, a tax write off for giving themn to charity? I think of a collection as something that doesn't get used just shown, so I don't consider these a collection, I want to be able to grab any knife I own and carry it for use during any given day. How do you handly excess cutlery?

I am with you man. Most of what I have laying around is junk though, a lot of Pakistan and other cheap stuff. I did not learn about quality cutlery until I found this place. I keep em around for now and practice sharpening on them or bastardizing them. I would kind of like to just ditch most of them though, but I don't want to saddle anyone with junk, and I don't think I should just throw them away. So I just am holding on to them until some better idea comes along.

You could always throw em on ebay to generate a little extra revenue for new knives. Also welcome to blade forums:)

I'm not sure how many knives I have, but only about a dozen of them see any use. Since I got my small Sebenza I just can't look at the others in the same way. Just ordered a 154CM Cuda EDC. Maybe it will find a place in the rotation.

Good idea Rkenny - I'll take apart one of my lessers to see how they're constructed and then try out one of theose "kit" knives, like the darrell Ralph one to see how I might like being a knifemaker

Paul, I looked at a Sebenza last nite thinking I'd want to get one but was disappointed, first for a large it was pretty small, I like a larger or fuller handle, and I like a blade that penertrates deeper and cuts deeper. Do they make one a little bigger than the large?

KC-havent tried anything on ebay not even browsing, can you sell slightly used Gerbers, Emmerson, CRKT's, etc.? & how do the tranactions take place?

I'm new to the forums but have read them for a while and finding there are others out ther like me has been cool. Heck, even my wife is glad I can now talk my knives excitement w someone other than her...

I recently went through the same thing. Luckily it was timed along with a trip back to see my relatives. Gave away a bunch of Gerber and CRKT.

I only miss one, and that one only a little -- the Gerber "Fred Carter" Utility-I. G10 handle, probably AUS-8A blade. Neat knife -- could have left it in my glovebox or something.

I have 4 that currently rotate through EDC:

Small Sebenza
Blue BM940
Mike Obenauf model 1
Cutelaria Korth "Fox"

My 154CM EDC was relagated to my shaving bag -- in case I lose my primary while traveling, it's a backup.

I've got some gents folders, some auto's and some fixed blades, but they mostly sit 51 wks out of the year.

I took alot of knives that I really don't use anymore to the local gunshow and did some trading. Eventhough I traded production for customs, I lost moey:( That said, it could be one option.

I have recently started going through my collection and that is PART of the reason I got my Gold Membership.

I will probably offer some of my knives for sale here and offer some up as free with the receiver covering the cost of shipping.

If my knives ever start taking up too much space I'll get a bigger apartment. :)

I have knives I don't use any more but they have so many memories attached to them.... I've used all those knives and carried most of them every day for a period of my life. I suppose it's different for people who buy knives for a collection.

There's a popular belief you should never sell or give away a knife that has cut you -- once it's been in contact with your blood it's yours; there's a link between you and that knife. I don't know if I believe that but I feel a link to all the knives that have been my daily carries, and I guess all of them have cut me a little. Hmm ... the only time I've ever cut myself really badly was with an Exacto knife and I don't feel any link to that knife at all -- I don't even know what happened to it and don't care. I never carried it; it was just an Exacto knife.

QP,
That's as big as the Sebbie gets. If you get a chance to handle one, it just might change your mind.

You can deduct the Fair Market Value of the knives if you donate them to a qualified charity - such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, a church, etc.

However, the charitable contribution is an itemized deduction and you will have to be able to itemize your deductions to take advantage of your benevolence.

I can't stand to have stuff just sit around gathering dust. I recently sold all the folders that I wasn't using. Got another one I haven't been carrying lately, and don't have a specific use for right now-it'll go next.
I've given some stuff away, too, to friends, coworkers, and on these forums. Got a fixed blade I'm going to give away soon. Nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't get used.
I'd much rather someone get some use out of them, then have them sit in a drawer.

Got a few with memories attached, or that were gifts. They stay. The rest are fair game (earn your keep, or get out!!:)).

QP -- I think there are almost as many answers to your question(s) as there are forumites.

Virtually every knife I own, I bought because I had dreamed about it, and wanted it. A few of them got carried, some haven't. Keep waiting for good opportunities. But, they almost all have a link to me, to my life, and I don't want to get rid of them, even if I'm not using them much.

I keep most of them near my PC, and have sort of an informal play rotation that I use to make sure that all get handled now and then, and I can remember things about them -- if I have memories.

I traded one knife that was so uncomfortable for me when I got it, that I never took to it. I'd wanted it badly, but there's nothing much useless than a knife that doesn't feel good at all in your hand. I adjusted with my Sebenza. The handle is a bit shorter than I'd like, and not too ergonomic, but the blade is plenty big for me. Knowing how well it cuts is worth a great deal, even if I rarely employ it.
