I'm excited about a new 560 Ti I just scored. $40.00 shipped doesn't sound too bad, right? I intend to send it to Buck for a blade swap. S30V would be nice, however, I'd "settle" for BG-42. Anyone know the status on blade swaps right now?

Hi GC,

$40 for a 560TI is a steal!!!! Nice job :) . Buck is still doing the blade swaps....but, maybe out of BG-42???? S30V is great stuff; I used my AG 110 during hunting season this year with amazing results. Post a pic when you get that new 560.

If it was me...I'd see if Leroy doesn't have a BG-42 or S30V 110 blade he would install for you...and you keep the 560 blade...with its distinctive tang stamp... ;)

jb,
I used my Buck Custom Shop 110 with Elk slabs and BG-42 this year for the buck and doe combo I killed this season. It worked very well, as always. I also have a Custom Shop Buffalo handled 110 and BG-42. Both of those have nickled bolsters. And a few old Buck 110's and 112's with 440C round out the folders from Buck in my collection.

chickentrax,
I've never owned a 560 before, so am unfamiliar with the tang stamp. I'd guess it says "560" and that is special because of the 560 is discontinued? I wanted the 560 for a couple of reasons. First, I've never owned one! Second, they are discontinued and when I found this one at such a bargain price NIB, well... you know I had to have it! Third, I thought it might make for a nice thin and lightweight carry knife as opposed the stouter more normal configuration. Think I'd be goofing up using the 560? I've got a bunch of knives, and no safe queens. They pretty much get rotated in the line up and packed if they belong to me. I just don't "collect" them. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just not my thing. BTW, what steel do you think Buck used on the 560's? 425M, maybe 420HC? Maybe I shouldn't fool with a blade swap, but being a bit of a steel snob it's hard to resist.

The 560 is much nicer to carry due to its slim profile and light weight. It is also much easier to clean than a 110 due to all metal construction. I have one with a BG-42 blade and I like it a lot better than S30V (it gets sharper). I would get an S30V blade at this point.

i bought a user 560 and loved it!
it is light in the pocket good grip
and in s30v would be close to the greastest user!
it WAS in the shop for repairs and came back with bos s30v for damm near best!
buck seems to be low on spechel steels for now.
i am sure they will have them again
seems like that there may have been arush on the other steels
and suprised them .. cant sell what you cant get in stock!
i am sure they will soon again
IMHO s30v rocks!

I am going to save you a lot of grief right now. First of all your going to hate the knife so just tell me were to send the money. I would like to prevent the disappointment of having that excellent offering from Buck.

I've used a lot of BG-42 and like the steel. I haven't used a lot of S30V, thus the want for it. Maybe I should reconsider the choice? It sounds like the true disappointment is the fact Buck discontinued the 560! What blade steel was standard factory issue for the 560?

GC, depends on the year of manufacture, could be 425M from late '80's, or the 420HC starting in 1992.

gc im not sure but going by the price i am guessing it has a gold tone to the handles if so i think they were the last offerings but i could be wrong

It sure would be nice if they would add the 560 to the product line again. I really don't understand why they would have dropped it. I don't think you could go wrong with Bg-42 or S30V.

Yes, the 560 blade/tang stamp is distinctive and only seen on the 560. There have been exceptions (like when no 560 blade was readily available to the Buck assembler, so a 110 blade was used) but broadly speaking, if it is a 560, it should have a 560 tang stamp.

If Buck starts their blade upgrade program again, and you send the 560 in for the upgrade to S30V, you will lose your 560 blade. Buck does not return the old blade. Again, there have been exceptions, but don't expect it. It's a liability issue.

There are knifesmiths here on the Forum, and listed in the BCCI Newsletter [hint, hint], who can do the blade swap for you. My advice ($.02 worth): find a 110 on eBay with BG-42, S30V, or ATS-34 and have them swap the two blades for you. Or leave the 560 blade loose. But keep the 560 blade.

Whatabeaut seems to have a supply of BG-42 110's for sale on eBay fairly regularly. Not cheap, but if you were to buy a Buck 110 at MSRP and pay for a blade upgrade, his price would be competitive.

My opinion, FWIW...

(And, BTW, I have a 560 with a BG-42 blade...IMO, it is not as collectable as a 560 with the original blade)

Yeah, but ya gotta kinda love those "redheaded stepchildren"...

That has to be one of the best deals I've heard of on that one ever. Great buy! The 560 is one of my favorite knives. I really liked the ones I've owned but never kept them for some reason. All mine had the standard production blades. If I got one with a BG42 blade like that one I just added a clip and thumb stud too for a forum member I'd hang on to it. I'd take BG42 over S30V personally.

I don't have the knife in hand yet, however, if I remember correctly from the pic on the net, it was a silver tone handle. Chickentrax, my problem is this - I'm not a collector. I know you're about to cringe right now, however, I want to use the knife. It'll get used in the field, packed, field dress deer, clean turkey's, skin squirrels, ect. The BG-42 would be an improvement for me. I have some questions, if it's alright I may send you a personal message or e-mail.

It's here! Why in the world these knives are discountinued is a major mystery to me. Why didn't we buy these? I love it, light, thin, still robust and sturdy in the Buck 110 way. My knife has a grey cast to it and the blade is marked 560X. The sheath is grey nylon with black trim and BUCK in black down the front. Idea's on date of manufacture and blade steel would be appreciated.

i dont know about the steel but the date is 1990 and by the sheath i would say it is one of the last years they made with the grayish finish
i have one of what i think is the first ones with the gray finish and it has the black cordura sheath
others may be able to pin it down closer

Hi GC,

X = 1990

Blade steel is 425M I think the change to 420HC was in 1994.
