Little clarification, please! Thanks!

In a sub-forum open to all members, can members be excluded from participating in a thread? If so, who decides what members are not allowed to participate? Mods? The person who opened the thread?

Just curious.

I do not know of a vBulletin mechanism for locking a specific member out of a thread, other than what Spark might be able to do.

I know that on some forum software, not sure about vBulletin though, it is possible to set individual permissions for members- effectively determining which subfora, and even in which threads, they are able to post. Would not be a big deal on a forum with a dozen or two members but, on a forum this size, I think that Spark would have to be a madman to do that and set that precedent.

Do you have an example thread we can look at?

He may be talking about one of the "Group" threads that have popped up recently.

Precisely. I am wondering how that is going to work. Say I decide to create a "marcinek chat" thread, in the appropriate subforum, for friends of marcinek to talk all things "marcinek." Maybe give out numbers and stuff, too. Can I say "If you are not a friend of marcinek, stay out"?

You can say what you like. You cannot enforce it. On the other hand, if a knife fan group asks people not to pop in and laugh at their group activities, they might be able to convince me to hand out trolling infractions for anyone showing up just to disrupt.

I will be starting a group solely for people who don't like to be in groups:rolleyes:

As long as it is done politely, expressing an opposing view is just legitimate discussion.

Here on bf.c, We don't recognize, as some other forums may, the concept of "thread ownership." Just because you started a thread doesn't mean that you "own" it. (Some of the exchange forums are a bit different.) Threads belong to the community.

Thanks, Mods! It's good to hear that not being a member of a group will not exclude one from participating in a "group" thread, and that expressing an opinion differing from that of the group will continue to be allowed....within the "normal" rules, of course. No doubt the creators of these groups/threads are aware of this.

Of course there isn't any exclusion from posting, but continually stomping on a thread where people are trying to have a little fun will likely earn someone a trolling infraction. Everyone should feel free to share their opinion on a topic but continually trying to torpedo a thread with negative posts (just for the sake of being negative) accomplishes what exactly? I'm not pointing a finger at you specifically...just making a general statement.

No offense taken. I just wanted to make sure that these potential "group" threads are subject to the same rules as any other thread, and will be moderated by the moderators and not the originators of the thread/group.

Glad to hear that appears to be the case.

I saw that one. Especially considering the knife company, it's a perfect example of "better not require excessive moderating." :p

No, outsiders may not be welcome, especially if "outsider" means someone who pops in to denigrate the fans favorite knives. That may cross the line into trolling. Moderators do not need to be playground monitors, though.
