So we just saw the Blade HQ Dodo sell out quick. There are a few other retailers that also release exclusives and they also tend to sell fast always leaving a few folks lamenting missing out.

How about a collaboration between Spyderco and the folks Like DLT, BHQ, and so on.

One identical model of knife that each store will customize and then release over the year. DLT would do their Red/M390, BHQ would do the Natural/M4, St Nicks would kick in and the others too.

Doing that may copies of the same model would help out the folks who might miss out if there was just one. And it would also feed the folks that must have one of each. Doing it in a staggered manner would give the buyers breathing room between the runs.

But isn't that exactly how they normally do it? How the collaborations work, as I understand it, is the dealers approach Spyderco and ask for an exclusive configuration and pick the steel and handle etc. They just don't all do it at the same time or for the same models.

Yes but they do pick different models. One shop will pick a Native, and another the PM2 and so on.

So this way Spyderco would Present a few models for consideration and they'd all have to agree on one (just like herding cats) . Then over the year the knives would be made and delivered in staggered periods. And series would be tied together.

Right now there are some folks who missed out on the Dodo from BHQ. Most wanted the knife and the steel and handle colour were secondary. This way if you miss the St Nicks version you'll sill have a shot at the DLT or the BHQ.

People will still miss out and be unhappy and flippers will still flip but this will just increase the chances of one of a particular neat knife. Spyderco could even do their own version in a Salt so probability of finding one would be higher. This wouldn't make everyone happy but it might make a few more happy.

They have distributor exclusives which are sold by multiple different dealers such as the GITD Delica and Brown g10 S35VN pm2.

For sure there a lot of exclusive knives. But for whatever reason some of the exclusives are wildly popular while others are just steady sellers.

those blade hq dodo's were gone in less than ten minutes!! It's crazy how fast those limited production or sprints sell out.

They sure do. The St Nicks ones the same, the Knife Joy one today the same.

So if you knew there would be 4 special runs of a particular knife even if you miss one there should be still an 50-80% chance you'll get one of the other versions.

If you really like PM2s or Natives you're pretty safe. But if you crave something a bit more unusual it's a lot tougher.

They were gone in minutes precisely because they are rare. If more of them were made, they wouldn't be sold out so fast; in fact they may sit at dealers for months if not longer;many people who competed to buy them would probably not buy them. Not sure if that's what dealers or Spyderco would want to see.

Lots of knives sit around. What's the ultimate goal? Sell a bunch of stuff that's nearly vaporware or have some stock so people who can't be on their 3 laptops at 10:00 till 10:01 sharp can buy one.

I've never missed one that I wanted yet but it sure sounds like a lot of folks do.

I don't care about how exclusive a knife is. All I care about is being able to get one if I want it.

This is how retailers do exclusives. I know it sucks to miss out on them but if you really want one it's pretty easy to get them. I managed to snag a bhq dodo and be checked out by 10:03 on my cellphone at work dealing with slow service so it's very possible.

Sypderco already does this and is wildly successful.
The don't do it with one specific model in a collaboration with a group of retail outlets.

Right now each store does what they want. A bunch do PM2s and Natives, one does a Shaman, one does a Dodo and so on.

Okay, so let's say it's a pm2 year. One does M390, one does vanax, and one does Rex-121.

Do you actually think any one person stands a chance of getting rex-121 more than they would under the current way of doing things?

I seriously doubt it.

That's not the point of getting one particular one. The point is that instead of just one chance there will be a one in three chance.

So if in December someone is on the road and can't be at the computer they' can regret missing out but they can also know that in Feb they will have another shot.

PM2 would be kind of a bad choice for a special run since it a common exclusive blade already but it's a good example because for the folks who missed out on Knife Joy can be sure at least two others will pop up at random.

This is all about making it more likely for more people to score something. Sure it would be nice to get one of each but that's the collector club.

I can't recall one special edition that didn't see some solid fans missing out on one. And fingers crossed because that more would be coming down the pipe maybe some of the flippers would be discouraged.

Custom shop would immediately kill most sprint runs (think aout PM2 for example). That clearly is a no go for dealers; may do no good for hyping up the Spyderco brand either.

All I can say is this,I simply don't every try getting a Bhq exclusives - as they all go extremely fast.I also don't like how the runs are so small or how they don't reorder another run of knives. Like KW did with their PM2 .

On the other hand, I like how Cutlery Shoppe and Knife Works does them, and I've been able to get the dealer exclusives that I want.I also like Distributor exclusives like the Brown PM2 and Manix2.Atm the DLC M390 Manix is widely available at several dealers while the uncoated version are out of stock, pretty much everywhere because they been selling for months.

Yes,these dealers might have excessive amounts of inventory which may last a year or two. This way everybody has a fair chance.
