I've been asked by a client to make a knife with "exhibition grade mammoth or fossil walrus ivory scales", but I'm having a really hard time finding something really nice on the regular suppliers' sites. He prefers the caramel-colored bark pieces, FWIW. Does anyone have a good source?

Mark Knapp go to his website or give him a call he can prob hook you up!!
Just google search Mark Knapp you will find it

Thanks Bill. I've looked at his site - not much there, but I've sent him an e-mail as well. Any other options anyone?

Don Hanson has on a few occasions thinned his stockpile of mammoth ivory -- might want to see if he's got any he might be interested in selling. It'll be sure to be the very best material if so.

You csan also try Charles Turnage at 210-353-5660. You won't see much in his ebay store. He's a a great guy to deal with. Frank

By the way you should ask your customer exactly what he wants. He gave you the colour but what about texture and does it need to be free of cracks? Frank

Thanks Frank. I actually do know what he wants - some fissures/texture would be nice, but not deep cracks. I'll reach out to Charles as well.

Might give Miles of Alaska a try. Have seen some good stuff from him before.

Brett Mathews with inherit knife has some nice stuff, hes a blade forums member send him a pm.

Thanks guys. I've e-mail MIles of Alaska already.

GHT11, do you know Brett's handle?

Thanks again!

Try Giraffebone.com Jerry had some of the best matched mammoth ivory I have seen in a while.

I sent you an email with pictures, not sure if you got it. Let me know if I need to resend. Thanks Mark. I could also post them here if you like. Thanks again

Mark: I, for one, would like to see what is currently available from you. Please post pics.

And more than just what's available, and to keep it from being a "sales" pitch... can you say what to look for in mammoth ivory? Possible flaws to look for etc? Educate us(me) a bit?

On second thought, I think it is best that I not post stuff I am selling here. I will put together some stuff that is not for sale, from my personal stash and show some of what is meant by "Exhibition Grade" and talk about what we look for. Sounds like a great topic for a new thread.
