A new full body armor suit. He says it could be mass produced for around 2000$. Looks funny though. I bet he could slim it down a bit. Why hasnt anyone made one of these suits before? If he could make it less bulky and still retain the same resistance to bullets and the like the army would probably take it.

What do you guys think?

This guy is a nutjob, he lives an hour from me , he owns a scrapyard and is runnning totally on ego. His wife got upset when he spent there life savings on this robot suit, that she left him.

I think a lot of inventors come over as nutjob.

"A reasonable man adapts himself to the world, an unreasonable man adapts the world to him, therefore all progress is made by unreasonable men"

George Bernard Shaw

I think the idea has merit, but you gotta think the military has been working on similar projects. I would bet cost, like it usually is, would be the major prohibitive factor in the end. He's entertaining, if nothing else.

The article doesn't tell us much, but it looks very interesting to me.

I look forward to a more thorough critique of the suit as it is, and which elements of it are more or less successful than the others.

It looks like some pretty serious defence to me, but what about grenades and the like? Maybe it can stop the scrapnel, but what if it gets close enough for the actual explosion to be deadly? But maybe he could invent some sort of modified bear suit for jungle explorers or something. In the military there are just going to be newer and more dangerous things coming at you all the time.

Was reading a report not too long ago on liquid that is soft and gell like when just sitting there, but try to hit it or poke a whole in it, and the incredibly long molecular chains will not break. and it acts like a solid.

They had it in a matrix between two layers of kevlar and spread over this carrier mat fiber that was really there to keep all the "armor" from following gravity and ending up at your feet. so far it had with stood 308 AP ammo and "greatly reduced" the energy of a 50 BMG round. it sounds very promising too.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I remember reading about that also. I think his project merits a look certainly. For $2K it would be godsend for our troops.

if i recall correctly, it's just some suspension of some plastic material or whatnot in mineral oil

the biggest concern i have is weight
after humping hills on a load of 15 kg, my feet feel like crap
i can only imagine doing it wearing this suit
*sweats already*

Can we volunteer to do the shooting with him in it?

The problem with innovation is that there are numerous parrallel innovations occuring. Take too long, and unless your idea creates a world shift, you will be left out in the cold.

With the extra weight you may be ok with APMs but likely to trigger a anti tank mine so that you will end up as soup in a can.

Knights used to fight in plate armour weighting around 60 pounds. Not only fight but ride, run, jump and do all the stuff to stay alive on the battlefield. They had to really fight with swords, spears and maces, much more tiring than firing a gun. Knights learned combat from childhood so they got used to fighting in armour which should be tailor made to the individual for a perfect fit.

It could be just the thing for urban combat where a lot of small arms, grenades, rpgs and booby traps are used. I think given the choice, most soldiers would want it if they had to fight.

Shing,

As far as I'm aware, not too many knights had to hop in and out of Humvees or amored vehicles all day. Not too many knights had to clear stairwells and narrow hallways for enemy combatants. Speaking of stairwells, not too many knights had to run up and down stairs.

Not too many knights had to wear assault packs, chest harnesses, or any load bearing equipment on top of their armor.

The average U.S. Troop already looks like some mutant Michelin Man with all the gear he has to wear. You want him to slap this bulky 'armor suit' on, and then try to put all the mission critical gear on top??? And then run around in 110 degree heat?

Troops need mobility, and they often need fine motor coordination: two things which this suit will clearly inhibit. Swinging a broadswoard is a different skillset than swapping mags. Riding a horse is a different skillset than driving a modern vehicle.

Was it hard to be a knight? No doubt.
Saying that is some sort of proof-of-concept for this 'invention' isn't exactly comparing apples to apples though.

yes, that's about the gist of it
also, if im not wrong, didn't knights have like squires to lift their 60 pounds of crap onto their horses?
i cannot imagine doing a fire and movement wearing that much gear
even if im invulnerable to small arms fire, i'm pretty sure a .5 hmg firing SLAP rounds will make swiss cheese of me, and you DON'T plan to meet only 5.56 ball rounds when you're in the field

There are two important survival aspects that this suit doesn't address. 1) Leopard crawl (Carl Lewis on fingertips) 2) Run like *$%^$%^ the wind.

A vet of the Rhodesian war described his experience being ambushed in a light armoured vehicle as being in an electric hail storm. I would guess that a multi directional hail of bullets at your suit would definitely require quick retirement. At least you have the option to retire. Something a bit lighter.

When the going gets tough,

I'm gone in a Puff.

IIRC, he never tested his grizzly suit against a grizzly. I don't think his tests ever reached close to the strength and aggression of a grizzly.

And is it just me, or does his helmet remind you of a guy by the name of Master Chief from Halo?
