Well, several of you know about the nanostriker fire starter by Exotac, and several of you know I carry a nanostriker with me always. I know that ssome of you guys see it as a bit small for your liking. Well, if you wished it was a little bigger, had a larger ferro rod, and had a larger striker then there is a nano for you now. Exotac just released the new nano XL. The housing is the same length as the original but larger in diameter, has a 1/4" diameter rod, and has a larger striker. I just got one yesterday so I haven't done anything with it yet, but I'll be checking it out tomorrow. Also, for the ones who were put off by the original (other than the Ti model) being imported, the XL is made in the U.S..

Seeing these makes me hope the new ESEE firekit will be available soon, too. I asked for one of these for Christmas, now I might need to change it over to the larger one.

Thanks for the heads up

That looks really good. I noticed on Exotacs website they have several new items coming out. I'm looking forward to the poly striker. I always carry a Boy Scout hot spark on a paracord necklace. The poly striker might replace it.

That seems pretty sweet! I like the concept and the larger option. :)

I love the concept, I got my first nano about two years ago and then gave it to a friend when I got the Ti version 6 months later. The Ti nano pictured has been on my key ring for a year and a half. I definitely like the larger option too.

Alright now we are talking lol.

Bryan

Yeah, I know you like big and orange lol, thought you'd like this one :)

The other night Jeff said that they are ready and waiting on him for paperwork...which could mean another month or two lol...but I'm really looking forward to those myself. Considering the price difference is so little, unless you are an ultra-light back packer who counts every gram, I'd go with the larger one. I did a demonstration with this one earlier for some friends at a local park. I like the new striker a lot!!

I got to check out the poly striker protos at Blade. They are pretty sweet and weigh next to nothing.

I saw that you asked about it a few days ago over there. I am definitely asking for the new one. And I do hope that Jeff and crew can get the new firekit out soon. That one has be very intrigued.

I'm glad they did this. I had no problem breaking my nano's fire steel. The step up may be just what was needed. they are a great design and luckily I had replacement steel's for mine. I'm glad to see this.

I think the larger one is the way to go. Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to getting one of those, hoping Jeff gets the paperwork together soon.

In the course of the last two years I've gone through four or five rods and have only had one break, and it broke soon after putting it in and it seemed like it may have been a defect but I had several extra rods on hand so I didn't worry about it. That said I am very glad for the larger diameter rod, I am by no means an ultra-lighter. How did yours break? Did you contact Exotac?

I really can't stand mistwalker. His posts always wind up costing me money. Past evidence...

I hear ya Guyon (of course you have had the same effect on me in the past too). I bookmarked their site and suspect it will cost me as well. Cool stuff!!!!

Gee, sorry bro...good evidence though, I have one just like that :) I've been patiently waiting for the Match Cap XLs for months now since i got to play with one at blade. They are a good bit larger so I am going to put one together as a survival kit and not just a match safe.

Yep, pretty cool gear...and it has cost me as well. I still have several Exotac products myself and I think I have given ten of the nanos and a few of the match caps as gifts over the last couple of years. The nanos are definitely my favorite key ring/neck lanyard fire starter. They weigh next to nothing and pack a lot of punch.

Well, Mistwalker, your post inspired me today to finally use my nanoStriker that I bought at last years BLADE show. Well, after a few strikes the terror rod broke!!!!
My ESEE fire kit still works great.

Well...it could be a defective rod I guess, out of starting a few hundred ignitions over the last couple of years I have broken one rod out of the four or five I have used, and I replace my rods once worn about half way. One thing to remember the ESEE requires a LOT more force than the misch rods in the nanos. Light pressure and fast strikes throw better sparks from misch rods. If it broke easily then I'd contact Exotac. People need feedback in order to address problems.

Right off the bat I could tell light pressure with more rapid flicks is what it would take to get the nano to ignite my fire. I was rather surprised when it snapped. You are right in that the ESEE requires a good bit more pressure. I'm ok with that.
I emailed Exotac earlier. We will wait and see.

Oh, I'm not knocking the ESEE fire starter at all, I don't mind the heavy pressure, the rod will last a really long time. It is my my favorite of it's size and I love the design, and I'm really looking forward to their next one. The advantage to the nano is that it goes everywhere I go on my key ring, I wouldn't want to carry the ESEE on a key ring. If it broke that easy something was definitely wrong and I bet they'll replace it.

Im really excited to see some new products coming out. Exotac is an awesome company. Great fit and finish and awesome designs. Way to go Exotac!

WOW!!!! That's really nifty!

What a cool design and engineering combo - spendy though.....

Not too cheap no, but the rods are inexpensive, relatively speaking, and replaceable.
