Are there any up and coming super steels that I need to know about? I know of s30v, s90v, etc... and cpm440v and stellite k6 but are there any "new" exotics out there?

what are the characteristics of s110V? I tried googling it a few days ago after seeing something on the kershaw forum, but came up empty.

Maybe the memory metal called Nitinol that Dwayne Dwyer from Strider Knives is using now in some of his customs.

Sandvik has some new stuff called Nanoflex, kershaw is using it in an upcoming model (or was it just a prototype?). It's supposedly some ultra strong for its weight stainless steel, they're marketing it as an alternative to titanium and aluminum due to the strength to weight ratio, and it can be hardened up into the rockwell 60 region.

so-lo---I will not cut with mine...unless I have to. :)
I have read some great reports from "users" over on the USN. Jump over there and read some of the testimomials. There is also info on sharpening. I think you will be impressed. Thanks.

It takes a while to wade through the 'nano' hype. It's an austenitic stainless steel that transforms to martensite while forming [deformation transformation] and the martensite can then be strengthened by precipitation. So for a blade you would have to roll the steel to get the deformation then HT [precipitation harden]....But they do make tubing for things like chairs of the material and I've been thinking of building another stainless steel chair !

Well s110v I thought was simular to 440v but I cant remember where I heard that. The Nitinol was used in like the 80's s125v goes in the s30v, s90v, etc... category. The only ones I havent heard of is 9v and 10v, who uses those? I was just interested in some new steels that i havent heard of. Thought it would be interesting.

It may not be new, but it was new to me - hadn't heard of it until this week.
The new Spyderco Mule Team is CPM-M4 steel...

Anyone know much about that?

I'm wondering why anyone would think of Nitinol or other shape memory alloys for a blade .It also involves an austenite/martensite transformation.
CPM M4 is used at times for blades .It's a high speed steel which is very wear resistant but harder to sharpen .Nothing new about it .

I have one! :D:D Brand new! Razor Blade sharp right out of the box.:thumbup:

I also have a Benchmade "gaucho" in M4. No harder to sharpen than S90V. Holds an edge as well or better as far as I can tell, although I've only had it a month or so.

I sharpen these, including the S90V, with an Edge-Pro, starting out with UF diamond plate to sharpen, and then 800 grit waterstone, and 2K and 7K polish tapes to polish. I finish it with a leather strop loaded with .5 micron diamond paste.

They truly are "Super Steel." :):):)
