Expedition Africa - What would you bring?

I've been watching Expedition Africa on The History Channel, it's not a bad show. Of course I am always watching to see what knives that they have brought. The chick has a Kabar and one of the guys has a kukuri and some sort of pukko I think. I've been asking myself what ONE knife would I bring in this situation (OK, you can also have a multitool ;))? I've been thinking about it and I think that the Kabar is actually a pretty good choice. 1095 is a great outdoor steel. The Kabar holds an edge pretty good and woud be very easy to sharpen in the field. Also, since it has a full guard, it would come in handy in case of any animal, two or four legged, attacks. I know, a gun is better, but in this case let's pretend that you're not allowed to bring a gun. Also keep in mind that you have to carry this knife across Africa with your other gear. So......what would you bring?

does anyone else think that their gear choices are not the greatest??? not even one of them uses trekking poles. They are also obvioslu sponsored by osprey packs... which i dont have a problem with since i think they are the bees knees. I think for the show to be better they should make them try to beat the original guys using the most modern methods... trekking poles Lighters etc... if they are given alot less of the time they should be able to make up for it with newer ideas/technologies

for me BK-9 or BK-2

They carried to much c *ap unessential gear,{learn Bush craft!} blade wise they have a good mix let’s see what is use the most, have to understand they are not for the most part Blade people.
More ways for Individual water carry to rehydrate on the move. Salt to keep from Cramps and trade goods.
It all comes down to Basics not fantasizes the world.
K- Bar, BK-7,...5-7 inch belt knife, For me a Khukuri with any of the others and a Multi tool

I don't know the show, but after spending a whole heap of life chillin' with Gambians I'd say nothing special required.

marinthus in South Africa also provides clues. He uses a wicked folder but by his own declaration his fixed is nothing special. [Looks no better than a Buck to me. In fact it looks like a Spanish rendition of a 1980's Buck].

I don't buy in to the “ease of sharpening” thing. Modern abrasives render all knives easy to field sharpen. As to the knife as a defensive tool in lieu of a firearm, well I've got a big negative on that too. A box cutter can make me a staff / spear.

I'd say use what it is you have rehearsed skill with.

I'd bring a Land Rover and the big new heavy Busse Khukri, along with four or five more porters to carry my stuff.

I'd make absolutely certain to leave the "navigator" and the "survivalist" behind, but I'd be damn sure I brought the little biologist. That's an essential piece of gear if ever there was one.

I'd probably bring my NWA forum knife. It's a good intermediate size to handle most chores. If allowed two knives, then probably a Farmer golok and a multitool or SAK farmer.

why worry about it when you can just bring a chest full of every knife imaginable and mayeb a chainsaw and have the natives haul it on their heads while you complain about the small backpack you are wearing?!?! [/sarcasm]

I have not seen every episode, but I think if Pasquale left, the others would die lost in the wilderness. He may not be the nicest person there, but I would trust him to get me out of there more than the others.

As for what knives to bring, I think I'd take my Swamp Rat Ratmandu and a Victorinox OHT. The Guides have machetes, right?
