Hello !

In october 2012, I'm going with Armenian's friends across Armenia througt an ancient silk road.

We move by feets, horses, and of course a little 4X4 !!!

I just take one knife, because the wound and I hesite between thwo of them : Sebenza 21 classic or XM 18 in 3"5 with slicer blade.

Have you an idea of the choice you've make with experience ?

Thank you and excuse me for my poor english.....

I'd take a fixed blade over a folder for any kind of extended trip outdoors. I like to have a small fixed blade and some sort of SAK or mutitool. I find it to be a very versatile combination.

I travel a lot and my rule for gear is "high quality but easy to replace". Things get lost, stolen, broken. So between a Sebenza and an XM-18. I'd probably pick the Sebenza. It's a great knife, and if you happen to lose it, it's readily available at several on-line stores.

Sounds like trip of a lifetime!

Both are excellent knives and will serve you fine. I'd imagine the Sebenza to be a better slicer, so that's the one id take.

I would most likely get an xm-18 so you can have a brightly colored handle in case you put it down. Sebbenza works great. You could really just flip a coin.

I would also take a fixed blade myself. If I had to pick between the xm and the sebenza however, I would pick sebenza. I sold my xm18 because it didn't really do it for me. I prefer the CRK knives because they cut better than the spanto I had. Can't speak to the slicer grind tho.

If you can get one, an XM18.
It's simply a more rugged folder. The ergonomics are better too.

I've done a fair share of adventure travels and trekking and this is my opinion about the kind of "gear" I bring along. First rule is to never bring anything that you can't afford to lose of have stolen. Second rule is to not stand out as someone with too much money or expensive equipment.

With this in mind and the fact that you are from France, I would suggest that you bring 2 knives with you: 1. a basic Opinel for you to carry & use; and 2. a nice Laguiole folder that you can give to your friend at the end of the trip, or which you can give to someone special that you meet during your travel. -or, you could trade it to someone who admires it.

Another vote for a fixed blade if possible. Any knife laws there?

If it were me, I'd take a Chris Reeve Nyala in a nicely done kydex sheath. Found this image on Bladeforums:

These are good suggestions.
But between the two knives you mentioned, I would pick the Sebenza. I really like its simplicity. Besides, to most people, at a glance, there is nothing about it appearance-wise that stands out as being more expensive than a lot of one-handed folders. Unless the other people know what Sebenzas/CRKs are, or can feel the quality.

Thank you for your answers !
I think i will take the Sebenza, beause if it's stolen or lose, it's easy to buy onther one, then it's very hard to find a XM 18 one.....
Thank you at all !
Chris
