Two questions for all of you bush bums out there...

1. Where is your favorite place to experience the wilderness? I know we are from all corners of the globe, and it will be interesting to see your local go-to spots.

2. Where do you really want to go someday to have your dream wilderness experience?

My favorite place to go locally is either kayaking in the Vernon Marsh off of the Fox River in WI, or Backpacking/Camping in Kettle Moraine State Forest in Southeast WI. The Forest has signs of glacial activity everywhere, is rich with wildlife, and it's great to spend a few nights there when I can

As far as my dream, I'd love to go into the backcountry of Yellowstone someday. In addition to that, my life won't be complete without one day kayaking in the Kenai Fjords of Alaska. I wouldn't mind exploring the terrain a bit too...

1. Smoky Mountain National Park, North East of Tremont Institute, Near Lynn Camp Prong, there's a little trib known as Mark's Creek.

2. Northwest US, Southwest Canada. In all my travels, I have never been to the Great Northwest. Its been a dream of mine for years now, I want to see a wild moose in its home, not on the 'puter, zoo, or TV, but out on some lake somewhere, scoopin' up algae and livin' large, moose style. Go figure.

I usually go to the Catskill mountains or Harriman State Park but would someday like to experience the backcountry in Maine and maybe Canada.

My favorite local place to frequent without killing the gas tank is just any source of saltwater where I can fish. My favorite spot to camp and hike in Texas is Lost Maples which I believe is sort of Midwest Texas around Garner State Park and/or Concan.

I'd LOVE to go to Alaska and burn my whole two weeks paid time off there......don't know how the missus would feel about that though :D

1. North Cascades Washington St. Specifically 4th of July basin and 10 mile basin. They are a chore to get to and very secluded, pristine wilderness. Also the Enchantments are amazing if I don't have the time to get into my basins :D

2. Norwegian Mountains and fjords look breath taking and I'm part Norwegian so it would be fun to see the area.

I would also like to spend some more time up in Alaska and the Canadian wilderness I can't get enough.

If you do make it up in this area you have to stop in at the enchantments, no moose that I know of, but amazing sights.

My favorite place to be to experience the wilderness... Southern Ohio when I am hunting. it is the best time of the year for me.

As to where I would like to go? Definitely up in Alaska somewhere.

I go up to the Sierra's every year several times for my wilderness camping. As for my dream spot, I would have to say Alaska.....

Right out my front door. The Alsea River and Drift Creek in Oregon are my front yard.

Some may think this is crazy, but I am blessed in that my father has ten acres in MD, a large portion of it woods. I know those woods like the back of my hand, kinda hard not to, but I always enjoy going down there. :)

I really need to broaden my range, but the central MD/PA region is too beautiful to pin down to one spot. With bad knees and a fat ass, gravel trails or better are the preferred trails to traverse. I have really fallen in love with Washington Monument State Park, and the Appalachian Trail that cuts through it. I have not done very much in the area, but it is a beautiful spot. Most of the small parks in Harford, Cecil, Baltimore, Carroll counties in MD, and York county in PA, I've been in. It's not the week long treks in the mountains that some here might be able to do, but it's what I can get out to do. Harpers Ferry, WV is another great spot, where the AT runs through.

My parents almost moved to Alaska, my father came very close to taking a job on the Alaska pipeline. I would like to go there. But, more important to me, is visiting British Columbia and Maine. As a young Stephen King fan, I became enamored of Maine, especially the coast. British Columbia, need I say more (Pitdog, you're not helping matters any :D). I would like to visit the land of my forebears. Europe, Mongolia, the plains states, specifically Montana. I think Montana is the best bet right now .

Like everyone else, I really need to get some good time in out there. I think I'm going to take a Saturday off and go for a walk!

Our home and property backs right up to one of the largest wilderness areas in the country. Certainly enough room out there to get lost forever, if you had a mind to.

Alaska is grand in some areas and beyond compare in many respects (unless you hop over into Siberia across the Straight). However, my favorite wilderness area is the spectacular 'Frank Church River of No Return', located in central Idaho (largest wilderness area in the lower 48). You want to fly in for access to the best country imaginable, IMHO.

A view from our property (great backpacking, fishing, camping out there, BTW).

ya dont have to come all the way out to the pnw to see moose-tho there are lots of good reasons and vast wilderness to draw a soul in.

lived in maine for a coupla yrs and moose were abundant
large spans of wilderness in that part of the country too
beauty and isolation that can rival alaska to some degree

Oregon coast is my favorite area.

I'd like to go see the Japanese countryside one of these days.

When I get to get out, it is in the Chattahoochee National Forest in north Georgia. I want to start checking out some of the areas of this a little further away than I usually get to go.

As far as dream spots, I would love to go to Alaska and lay out under the stars and watch the northern lights.

One error I keep seeing from folks that come to WA state for hiking and the like is that they tend to just stay in the Cascades. While the Cascades are quite beautiful, the Olympics have a lot less folks thrashing them year in and year out and have some of the best views I have ever seen if you want to see mountains going pretty much straight into the ocean.

Much higher chance of being alone as well, if that's what you want. :)

I actually been to Maine, and did see some beautiful country. I did see tons of moose merch (gots me sum too), but I didn't get to see one while I was there. We went out lookin', but no luck. I was only there for a few days, tho.

I just want to go see the NW. I've never been there, and I always thought it was gorgeous. I go to see a buddy in Wyoming to do some huntin' ever so often and I was blown away by the views there.

We are planning a vacation in a few years when my girls get big enough to enjoy/remember it. Headin' to the Dakotas, to the Black Hills, Rushmore, Devils Tower, headin' west through to Yellowstone, gonna bum there a little, head over to see the Redwoods, and PNW. Head home, should take about 3 weeks with lots of camping and fun.

That sounds like fun!

Shotgun, your coast picture is wonderful, and welcome to Inaka (country side) Japan.
