I do quite a lot of sharpening, and I sharpen and use a lot of S35VN. Generally I've always done a high-polished finish, working my way up to 0.6 micron cermics and finishing with 1 and 0.5 diamond strops. And this has always proved to be a great, easily maintainable, attractive edge for use.

However, lately I've really enjoyed the results I got on S90V by finishing on a much more coarse grit (400 diamond stones). I'm curious if people have any experience running S35VN with a coarse finish, how well it maintains, cuts, etc. Obviously it has a lot less vanadium in it than S90V, so I'm curious if it would "like" a toothy edge in a similar way or not. Thoughts?

I find s90v excels in a coarser edge. S35vn on my native5 and 450 have done better with finer edges and by fine i mean spyderco fine ceramic and just a couple light passes on strop to tidy the edge. But if i would go too far on strop the edge loses some slicing capabilty. Try some tests cuts through paper towel at different finishes. That will give you a good idea of what edge you will prefer each in.

I sharpened my 0450 on sic stone yesterday as an experiment and finished with a few passes on loaded strop. It had a nice aggressive edge that sliced the paper towel well but i still prefer it at the medium to fine ceramic level. It seems just right. I really dislike my edges with too polished of an edge.
