Experience with sharpening a Head/Round knife on an EdgePro?

I have Al Stohlman's book Leathercraft Tools that shows the "proper" way to sharpen a round knife on a stone. I have tried his directions, but the technique is pretty difficult.

I have an EdgePro Apex, but I would like to hear if anyone has tried sharpening a round knife on one before I take a swing at it.

The edge pro might do ok but I don't think it will be able to follow the curve properly, your bevel angles will not look even.

Thanks for the feedback knifenut1013!

Yes, I see only being able to sharpen small sections and having to keep the blade in a circular path. With the handle in the way it will be especially hard.
If I give it a try and figure something out I will post.

Is that the Ulu shaped knife you're talking about?

EDIT: The real reason I'm asking is because IF it is, this might seem a bit extreme, but you could create a cradle block so the handle and blade would actually sit properly on the apex.

Keeping in mind, the edgepro isn't really designed with this type of knife in mind, but with a platform for the blade to rest on you should be able to put a sick edge on it.

the other thing I would recommend would be a rod from a sharpmaker or one of those extendable diamond rods.

hopefully these two pictures help me illustrate my point.

the curve of the plate simulates the curve of your round knife, the handle of the knife in my hand simulates the handle of your knife, and the pen simulates a sharpening rod.

What you do with the rod is use your thumb to anchor the knife and rod to the same pivot point, also allowing you to adjust the angle of the sharpening rod or file. A simple arcing technique is used in conjunction with a black sharpie to ensure that you are sharpening the edge of the blade.

Hope this helps
