Probably one of my favorite Spyderco knives is my PM3 CPM S110V "Blurple". I've had it several years now and sent it back to Golden a few months ago for a stripped clip screw and it came better than ever. I decided to try and clean the scales today first with various cleaners and a toothbrush which I wasn't impressed with. Then I had the bright (maybe not) idea to toss the whole thing in my Ultrasonic cleaner. It was full of Simple Green which was my likely error being water based. Came out looking pretty good but was worried about corrosion so I hosed it down with WD-40 and wiped it down in and out pretty well. Probably should have taken it completely apart. Anybody else just toss them into the ultrasonic? Preferred Ultrasonic solution that won't cause corrosion?

So, I accomplished nothing on my PM3 because the scales still look dirty and on top of that, my cheap Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner tried to burn my house down. That's a bit dramatic but It ran itself dry, melted the basket and stunk up the basement pretty good. So I'm a dumbass with a dirty knife, on to black G10 scales...

Try aerosol contact cleaner? Or brakecleaner? I often just use what's available when I'm at work to get grease off my handle. Usually a frn handle so I'll use contact cleaner, its plastic safe

In my (considerable) experience, Simple Green does not rinse clean, it leaves a residue that has to be scrubbed off. Not something I would suggest for cleaning without disassembly.

Thanks folks! I'll play with the rest of the chems in the inventory tomorrow and see what happens. I haven't hurt the G10 yet so it's proving it holds up to stuff.

So it seems my knife isn't even dirty! I was looking at some new Spyderco purchases and saw a picture of another "Blurple" one and it shows the same dark sections. Finally dawned on me that it's the liners showing through the scales. Been carrying this knife off and on for the better part of 5 years and it never even dawned on me. The more you know.
