Experimenting with integrals

I love to experiment and try new things. These experiments were motivated by necessity, that being a way to make a full tang integral with bolsters and double lug guard out of W pattern steel. I've done integrals similar to this but the bolster area was forge welded on as a separate process and did not have a double lug guard. The idea to stick these blocks together and then forge out a blade came from a demo that Owen Wood gave at Travis W's hammer in. He took the parts a folder blade with edge wrapped damascus stuck them together, put em in a box and after a generous soak gave a gentle tap with his hammer on the anvil and the parts were welded together. I have always understood that damascus layers need at least 50% reduction to make a good weld. I've learned otherwise:), Thanks Owen. To ensure the weld was a good one, the blade and tang sections were drawn out using aggressive drawing dies on the press. A sure fire way of finding out if you have a poor or partial weld is drawing it out on the press.

One of the other problems I've had with my integrals was the handle material either expanded or contracted after completion. The handle treatment on this knife was inspired by Mr. John White and I love it. I no longer have to worry what environment the knife ends up in, it will always feel good in the hand with no sharp edges. Thank you John.

This is my second attempt at this process the first was on a bowie blade(non integral) which you will see sometime soon.

Specs - 9 1/8" blade OAL 14 1/4"

Hope you like it and cant wait to make the next one.

This is a YouTube link of the knife.

That knife is very nice. I think the flute around the integral really sets it off.

Just another simple knife.....maybe you can try something a little more challenging next time....:p

Beautiful job, Mike !

I think the guard is too short side to side....everything else looks pretty tasty.

I agree Steven 100%. I cant tell you how many heats I took trying to upset the back side of the guard to make it longer. Lessons learned for the next one.

You must be having fun, Mike.

As you say, a little different basting on the guard next time, but the rest of that baby looks good enough to eat right now.

Love the handle...

John

Wow Mike! I like that very much. Very cool mate. Would love to see a WIP on that :D
Cheers Keith

that's some fine work Mike!

Yes, I agree, the guard could be longer, but that's great execution of a very difficult knife.
VERY IMPRESSIVE! You got talent.:thumbup::thumbup:

Mike, Very nice indeed. I know how much this one tested you. Hats off to you Pal. I'm excited to see that next project..

Thanks for sharing

Way to go Mike breaking new ground this knife is great for so many reasons but most of all it is a new approach to the forged integral cant wait to see the next one very very cool
