Before ordering spikes or shurikens, we decided to experiment a bit with things we could easily make. Visiting the local hardware store, we purchased a few 7", 10", and 12" spikes. (These are large nails, but when they are this large they are referred to as spikes.)
With a vise, bench grinder, and hacksaw, I first tried grinding off the head of a 12" spike. That can be done, but it would take quite a while on the grinder. A hacksaw worked much better.
Next, I made the point of the spikes sharper and cleaned off any sharp edges with the wire brush side of the grinder.
All the spikes ended up being 1/4" shorter: 6 1/4", 9 1/4", and 11 1/4"
Here's how they ended up:
6 1/4": 2.0 oz = 57 gm
9 1/4": 4.5 oz = 128 gm
11 1/4": 6.0 oz = 170 gm
Time for testing...
