As I've been researching hand-forged tomahawks/axes from various makers, I'm puzzled by the price differences. If I select 3-5 domestically made high quality hawks at random, all of which are hand-forged in similar manners, utilize similar handle and head materials, and share similar dimensions, what justifies a price range of $60 - $200 from the different makers? There doesn't seem to be any perceptible differences in quality or craftsmanship in my random sampling. Is the $200 model that much better than the $60 model?

Worth noting is the closeness in the various makes/models I've researched. This is not a Winkler vs. United comparison by any means.

Thanks in advance for any expert opinions and explanations.

I don't own any high quality hawks and just recently gave away my only one: a CS trail hawk that I had stripped/reprofiled... I don't really see the appeal or advantages to them over axes/hatchets (since I'm more likely to fantasize about actual tool usage than having to defend myself). But to each their own..

As for the question at hand - a lot of it is reputation. Many makers just starting out will keep their prices low so they can get their stuff out there while established makers will tend to bump up theirs since they know they already have a buyer base and are decently known in the community. After that, it tends to be fit and finish / materials.

Some makers put a better finish on there hawks better edges better head to haft fit . Some will decorate their hawks file work or whatever some have a faster turn around depends on what you're looking for .
